Manganese and Doripenem

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Manganese interacts with whole categories of medication. Doripenem falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Manganese in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

Moderate

QUINOLONE ANTIBIOTICS

1 of 2

Why this applies to Doripenem

Doripenem falls under QUINOLONE ANTIBIOTICS — the group Manganese interacts with.

Theoretically, manganese might reduce the absorption of quinolone antibiotics.
Manganese is a multivalent cation. Interactions resulting in reduced quinolone absorption have been reported between quinolones and other multivalent cations, such as calcium and iron.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Probable Evidence D

Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..

Here's something worth flagging, though it may not even apply to you. The concern on file is that manganese, a positively charged mineral, can bind to certain antibiotics in the gut and keep them from being absorbed, much like calcium or iron does. The worry is that less drug gets in, so the antibiotic could work less well against your infection.

The catch is that doripenem (Doribax) is given as an IV injection, not a pill you swallow. Since it goes straight into your bloodstream, an oral mineral like manganese can't block its absorption from your stomach. So in real life this interaction is mostly theoretical here. Still, it's smart to mention any supplements to your pharmacist or doctor so they have the full picture.

TETRACYCLINE ANTIBIOTICS

2 of 2

Doripenem also falls under TETRACYCLINE ANTIBIOTICS.

Theoretically, manganese might reduce the absorption of tetracycline antibiotics.
Manganese is a multivalent cation. Interactions resulting in reduced tetracycline absorption have been reported between tetracyclines and other multivalent cations, such as calcium and iron.

Here's the honest picture: the interaction we have on file is really about oral tetracycline antibiotics, where a mineral like manganese can bind to the drug in your stomach and keep your body from absorbing it. Doripenem isn't a tetracycline, and just as importantly, it's given as an injection (an IV), not a pill you swallow. Because it goes straight into your bloodstream, there's no stomach absorption step for manganese to get in the way of.

So for Doripenem specifically, I wouldn't expect a meaningful problem from taking manganese. This concern is theoretical and tied to oral drugs, not IV ones. Still, while you're being treated for a serious infection, it's always smart to let your pharmacist or doctor know about every supplement you take so they can keep an eye on the whole picture.

What These Ratings Mean

Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.

Severity how clinically significant the interaction is
Major

Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.

Moderate

Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.

Minor

Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.

Likelihood how strong the evidence is that the interaction actually happens in people
  • LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
  • ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
  • PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
  • UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.
Evidence the quality of the studies behind the rating (graded A–D)
  • AHigh-quality meta-analysis (quantitative systematic review).
  • BCase-control study.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Doripenem page

“Two entries here matter more than all the others, and I would read them first. Doripenem (Doribax) is an intravenous antibiotic reserved for serious bacterial infections, which means anything that weakens treatment or piles on risk deserves genuine caution.”

About Manganese

What is Manganese?

Manganese
  • Bone health support
  • Antioxidant and enzyme support
  • Filling dietary gaps
  • Metabolism support
  • Wound healing

Manganese is an essential trace mineral your body needs in small amounts for bone formation, metabolism, and antioxidant defense, and most people get enough from a normal diet. Supplements may help if you have a genuine deficiency, but too much can be harmful—especially to the nervous system—so do not take high doses without guidance from a pharmacist or doctor.

About Doripenem Injection

What Is Doripenem Injection Used For?

Brand name: Doribax

  • Doripenem injection is used to treat serious infections of the urinary tract, kidney, and abdomen that are caused by bacteria. Doripenem injection is not approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat pneumonia that developed in people who were on a ventilator in a hospital. Doripenem injection is in a class of medications called carbapenem antibiotics. It works by killing bacteria.

  • Antibiotics such as doripenem injection will not work for colds, flu, or other viral infections. Taking antibiotics when they are not needed increases your risk of getting an infection later that resists antibiotic treatment.
