Hallucinations and behavioral changes have been reported in a patient with liver disease who was taking haloperidol and manganese. Researchers speculate that taking manganese along with haloperidol, phenothiazine-derivatives, or other antipsychotic medications might increase the risk of manganese toxicity in some patients.

Here's the thing to understand about this pairing: it's not that your manganese supplement makes olanzapine (Zyprexa) stronger or weaker, and it's not the other way around either. The concern is a little different. There's a theory that taking an antipsychotic alongside extra manganese could make it easier for manganese to build up in the body, raising the small risk of manganese toxicity, which can affect the nervous system (think tremor, stiffness, or movement changes).

I want to be honest about how shaky this evidence is. It comes mostly from a single report in someone who also had liver disease and was on a different drug (haloperidol). For most people getting normal dietary amounts of manganese, this isn't something to lose sleep over. Concentrated high-dose supplements are where I'd be more cautious. Before adding a manganese supplement, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

What Is Olanzapine Used For?

Brand name: Zyprexa

Olanzapine treats schizophrenia and the manic or mixed episodes of bipolar I disorder in both adults and adolescents (ages 13–17). It can also be used alongside valproate or lithium to treat manic or mixed episodes in adults. When combined with fluoxetine, olanzapine tablets and orally disintegrating tablets are used to treat depressive episodes associated with bipolar I disorder and treatment-resistant depression in adults.

Olanzapine intramuscular injection (short-acting) is used by healthcare providers to quickly calm acute agitation in adults with schizophrenia or bipolar I mania. Zyprexa Relprevv — a separate, long-acting intramuscular formulation available only through a restricted program — is indicated specifically for the treatment of schizophrenia in adults.
