Manganese and Norfloxacin

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

QUINOLONE ANTIBIOTICS

Why this applies to Norfloxacin

Norfloxacin falls under QUINOLONE ANTIBIOTICS — the group Manganese interacts with.

Theoretically, manganese might reduce the absorption of quinolone antibiotics.
Manganese is a multivalent cation. Interactions resulting in reduced quinolone absorption have been reported between quinolones and other multivalent cations, such as calcium and iron.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Probable Evidence D

Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the practical concern with these two: manganese can grab onto norfloxacin in your stomach and keep your body from absorbing the full dose. Manganese is a charged mineral (a multivalent cation), and we already know minerals like calcium and iron do this to fluoroquinolone antibiotics. So it's a reasonable theory that manganese behaves the same way. If less norfloxacin gets into your bloodstream, the antibiotic may not work as well to clear your infection.

The good news is this is easy to manage. Spacing them out usually does the trick, taking norfloxacin a couple of hours before, or several hours after, your manganese. Just double-check the timing with your pharmacist so you get the full benefit from your antibiotic.

What These Ratings Mean

Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.

Severity how clinically significant the interaction is
Major

Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.

Moderate

Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.

Minor

Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.

Likelihood how strong the evidence is that the interaction actually happens in people
  • LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
  • ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
  • PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
  • UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.
Evidence the quality of the studies behind the rating (graded A–D)
  • AHigh-quality meta-analysis (quantitative systematic review).
  • BCase-control study.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Norfloxacin page

“The major entries on this page are the ones to understand first. With norfloxacin, a fluoroquinolone antibiotic usually prescribed for urinary tract infections, the biggest risks don't add side effects, they stop the drug from working.”

About Manganese

What is Manganese?

Manganese
  • Bone health support
  • Antioxidant and enzyme support
  • Filling dietary gaps
  • Metabolism support
  • Wound healing

Manganese is an essential trace mineral your body needs in small amounts for bone formation, metabolism, and antioxidant defense, and most people get enough from a normal diet. Supplements may help if you have a genuine deficiency, but too much can be harmful—especially to the nervous system—so do not take high doses without guidance from a pharmacist or doctor.
