Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product contains one active ingredient: potassium. Potassium is a mineral your body needs for nerve and muscle function, including a steady heartbeat.

The tablet also contains several inactive ingredients — cellulose, calcium silicate, croscarmellose, and vegetable magnesium stearate — which are fillers and binders that help hold the tablet together.

Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not assessable

We hold no graded evidence for this product's ingredients for its stated purpose.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: Supports muscle and nerve health.
  • We looked for evidence on: Muscle function, Nerve function, Electrolyte balance, Muscle cramps.
  • Our graded evidence for these ingredients doesn't cover that particular purpose.

We don't have effectiveness data on file for this product. That said, potassium is essential for your heart and muscles to work properly.

If you've been told by your doctor that your potassium is low, a supplement prescribed or recommended by them may help bring it back to normal. If you're considering this on your own, talk with your doctor or pharmacist first to see if you actually need it.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Potassium taken by mouth is generally well tolerated in most people. The most common side effects are mild — belly pain, belching, diarrhea, gas, nausea, or vomiting.

Rarely, dangerously high potassium levels can cause heart rhythm problems, low blood pressure, or confusion. Potassium from a normal diet is safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

However, the safety data advises using supplements only under medical guidance in pregnancy, and you should check with your doctor before using a supplement while breastfeeding. People with kidney disease are at higher risk for dangerous blood potassium levels and need extra caution.

The most serious documented interaction for these ingredients is Moderate. Check your medications for a personalized result.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Potassium.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Moderate.
  • For scale: 62 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

Check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking this product if you're on potassium-sparing diuretics (water pills that spare potassium), ACE inhibitors, or angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs). All three drug types raise your risk of dangerously high blood potassium when combined with a supplement.

If you have kidney disease or take any blood pressure or heart medication, that conversation is a must.

Ace Inhibitors (Aceis)

Using ACEIs with high doses of potassium increases the risk of hyperkalemia.
ACEIs block the actions of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system and reduce potassium excretion. Concomitant use of these drugs with potassium supplements increases the risk of hyperkalemia. However, concomitant use of these drugs with moderate dietary potassium intake (about 3775-5200 mg daily) does not increase serum potassium levels.

Likelihood Likely Evidence C
Angiotensin Receptor Blockers (Arbs)

Using ARBs with high doses of potassium increases the risk of hyperkalemia.
ARBs block the actions of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system and reduce potassium excretion. Concomitant use of these drugs with potassium supplements increases the risk of hyperkalemia. However, concomitant use of these drugs with moderate dietary potassium intake (about 3775-5200 mg daily) does not increase serum potassium levels.

Multi-Source Potassium by Sundown Naturalist: Common Questions

Does Multi-Source Potassium by Sundown Naturalist interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Multi-Source Potassium has a known interaction with 62 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Multi-Source Potassium contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Can I take this if I'm on a blood pressure medication?
Not without checking first. Several common blood pressure drugs — including water pills, ACE inhibitors, and ARBs — can raise your potassium dangerously when paired with a supplement. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about your specific medications before you start.
Is potassium safe during pregnancy?
Potassium from food is fine. But the safety data advises using supplements only under medical guidance during pregnancy. Talk with your doctor before taking this supplement if you're pregnant.
What are the side effects?
Most people tolerate it well. Mild side effects can include belly pain, belching, diarrhea, gas, nausea, or vomiting. Rarely, very high potassium levels can cause heart rhythm problems or low blood pressure — which is why it's important not to take more than your doctor recommends.
Can I just take this to boost my health?
Not really. Potassium is essential, but too much is as risky as too little — it can hurt your heart. Only take a supplement if your doctor has confirmed you're low and recommended it.
What if I have kidney disease?
Your kidneys help control potassium levels, so kidney disease raises your risk of dangerous blood potassium. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist before taking this product if you have any kidney problems.
