Natural Acidophilus Probiotic Complex Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Natural Acidophilus Probiotic Complex against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Natural Acidophilus Probiotic Complex by Rite Aid Pharmacy
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
This probiotic capsule contains three active bacterial strains: Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidobacterium bifidum, and Lactobacillus helveticus. These are live microorganisms meant to support your gut flora.
The capsule also contains inactive ingredients — microcrystalline cellulose, a capsule shell, silica, and magnesium stearate — which help hold the product together and deliver it.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence is mixed and depends on what you're hoping it will help with. Lactobacillus acidophilus is possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), Helicobacter pylori infection, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and bacterial vaginosis.
Bifidobacterium bifidum is possibly effective for IBS and respiratory tract infections. Lactobacillus helveticus, however, has insufficient evidence for the conditions studied — we don't know yet if it works.
For many other conditions these strains might be used for, the data simply isn't established.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
These probiotics are generally well tolerated in healthy adults and children. The main caution: both Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium bifidum carry a small theoretical risk of serious infection in people with weakened immune systems or critical illness, though this is rare.
Lactobacillus helveticus should be used only with your doctor's guidance because safety data are limited. Minor gastrointestinal side effects — bloating, gas, abdominal discomfort — can happen, though they're uncommon.
Rashes and itching were reported in one trial but it's unclear if the probiotics were responsible. Both Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium bifidum are rated possibly safe in pregnancy; there isn't enough data on Lactobacillus helveticus in pregnancy or lactation, so talk with your doctor.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check your antibiotic medications before taking this probiotic — the two shouldn't be taken at the same time. Antibiotics can reduce how well the probiotic works by killing the live organisms in it.
Your doctor or pharmacist can help you space them out properly.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This is a three-strain probiotic that may help with IBS, some antibiotic-related diarrhea, and certain infections, though evidence varies by strain. The main thing to watch: separate it from antibiotics by several hours so the medication doesn't kill off the live organisms.
If you have a weakened immune system or serious illness, check with your doctor before starting. Talk with your own doctor or pharmacist about whether this is the right choice for what you're dealing with.
