Probiotics Ingredients & Drug Interactions
by Pharmax
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Probiotics against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy
Probiotics is a dietary supplement by Pharmax with 4 active ingredients. Its ingredients are commonly taken for digestive health and balance, diarrhea (including antibiotic-related), vaginal yeast and bacterial infections.Based on those ingredients, 182 medications have a known interaction with it, the most serious rated moderate. The ingredients most likely to interact are Lactobacillus acidophilus (CUL-60), Bifidobacterium bifidum (CUL-20), Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis (CUL-34). Use the checker below to test your specific medication, or read the full HelloPharmacist Interaction Report.

HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Probiotics by Pharmax
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
Pharmax Probiotics contains 4 active ingredients: two strains of Lactobacillus acidophilus (CUL-60 and CUL-21), Bifidobacterium bifidum (CUL-20), and Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis (CUL-34). These are all beneficial bacteria — probiotics — that live naturally in the gut and are meant to support digestive and immune health.
The product also includes inactive ingredients (cellulose and hypromellose) that serve as fillers and the capsule material.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The data shows Lactobacillus acidophilus is possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), Helicobacter pylori infection, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and bacterial vaginosis. Bifidobacterium bifidum is possibly effective for IBS and respiratory tract infections.
Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis is possibly effective for respiratory tract infections, IBS, and constipation. For other conditions listed — such as allergic rhinitis (hay fever), Alzheimer disease, and generalized anxiety disorder — the evidence is too limited to rate whether these probiotics help or not.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
These probiotics are generally well tolerated by healthy adults and children. The most common side effects from probiotics in general include mild gastrointestinal discomfort such as gas, bloating, abdominal pain, and diarrhea — but these are uncommon.
A small number of trial participants taking a combination that included L. acidophilus reported rash or itching, though it's unclear whether the probiotics themselves were responsible. Rare cases of serious infection (bacteremia, sepsis, abscess, and meningitis) have been linked to L. acidophilus, though most occur in people with underlying illness or weakened immunity.
Pregnancy data show L. acidophilus and B. bifidum are possibly safe, though lactation data for these ingredients aren't on file — talk with your doctor or pharmacist about use while breastfeeding.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
If you're taking antibiotic drugs, do not take this product at the same time — antibiotics may kill the live organisms in this probiotic and reduce its effectiveness. Space the two out by several hours and confirm the exact timing with your doctor or pharmacist before you start.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Pharmax Probiotics may help with IBS, certain respiratory infections, antibiotic-related diarrhea, and a few other digestive issues, though the evidence varies by strain and condition. The main thing to watch is timing: if you're on an antibiotic, space it several hours away from this product so the antibiotic doesn't kill off the beneficial bacteria.
Generally well tolerated, but people with weak immune systems should check with their doctor first, and anyone on antibiotics should confirm the timing with their own pharmacist or doctor.

Probiotics by Pharmax Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Pharmax Probiotics contains four active probiotic strains — Lactobacillus acidophilus (two strains), Bifidobacterium bifidum, and Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis — all of which interact with antibiotic drugs (Moderate severity).
Since these probiotics are live, active organisms, taking them at the same time as antibiotics may allow the antibiotics to kill off a significant portion of the beneficial bacteria, reducing how well the probiotic works. Altogether, these interactions span 182 individual medications.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
The key here is timing. You'll want to separate when you take your antibiotic and when you take this probiotic — your doctor or pharmacist can tell you the right spacing for your situation.
This is especially important if you're taking probiotics to help prevent or recover from antibiotic-associated diarrhea (loose stool caused by antibiotics), since that's one area where L. acidophilus shows promise.
No other medication types are documented to interact with the ingredients we checked. Still, run your exact medications through the interaction checker on this page to confirm there's nothing we've missed specific to what you're taking.
