Lactobacillus acidophilus is generally well tolerated in healthy adults and children. Gastrointestinal side effects like stomach discomfort, abdominal pain, bloating, flatulence, and diarrhea can occur when taking probiotics in combination, but these are uncommon.

In rare cases, the live bacteria have been reported to cause serious infections in certain patients — this risk is thought to happen mainly when bacteria leak from the gut into the bloodstream, and your doctor should evaluate your personal risk. NutraFlora scFOS is generally well tolerated at food amounts but can cause gas, bloating, abdominal pain, and flatulence, especially at higher doses; however, clinical trials at doses up to 15 grams daily for 8 weeks did not show more of these symptoms than placebo.

For pregnancy, Lactobacillus acidophilus is rated possibly safe; data on NutraFlora scFOS during pregnancy and lactation isn't on file. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist before taking this product if you're pregnant or nursing.

Antibiotic Drugs

Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus acidophilus with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. acidophilus.
L. acidophilus preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. acidophilus preparations by at least two hours.
