DHEA is generally well tolerated in typical doses over the short term, but because it's a hormone, it needs medical oversight. Long-term use raises some concern about increased cancer risk.

The most common side effects are acne (usually mild and dose-dependent), headache, insomnia, mood changes, and nausea. Women may experience masculinization—voice deepening, increased facial hair, irregular periods, oily skin, and breast size changes.

Human and laboratory research show that DHEA and DHEA-S can inhibit platelet aggregation.
