Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

youtheory men's Shilajit contains a single active ingredient: shilajit, a mineral-rich substance traditionally used in Ayurvedic medicine. The product also includes several inactive ingredients — microcrystalline cellulose, vegetable cellulose, vegetable magnesium stearate, croscarmellose sodium, and silicon dioxide — which serve as fillers and binders to form the capsule.

Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not established

The graded evidence we hold for these ingredients covers different conditions than the ones this product is marketed for, so there's no established rating for its stated use — see Shilajit's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: testosterone support and male vitality.
  • We looked for evidence on: Male infertility, Sexual desire, Sexual dysfunction, Athletic performance, Muscle strength, Androgen deficiency — and 2 related terms.
  • The closest evidence on file: Shilajit is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Sexual dysfunction (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Shilajit is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Athletic performance, Muscle strength, Sexual desire, Male infertility.

The evidence we have for shilajit is not yet established for the uses studied. The product is marketed for Alzheimer disease, sexual dysfunction, athletic performance, benign prostatic hyperplasia (enlarged prostate), and osteoporosis, but we hold insufficient reliable evidence to rate it for any of those conditions.

If you're thinking about shilajit for one of these reasons, it's worth discussing what the current science does and doesn't show with your doctor.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Shilajit is generally well tolerated in the research we've seen, though a small number of adverse effects have been reported. Rarely, headache follows shilajit use.

One case of a severe allergic reaction — hives and anaphylaxis — was reported in a woman after taking a higher dose; that's uncommon but serious. A case of high blood pressure linked to mineral imbalance occurred in a woman who took shilajit during pregnancy, though a direct causal role couldn't be confirmed.

Because unpurified shilajit can contain heavy metals or other contaminants, use only purified, tested brands. The safety data is not enough to recommend shilajit during pregnancy, so it's best avoided then.

Safety while breastfeeding is unknown, so avoid it if you're nursing. If you're pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding, talk with your doctor or pharmacist before considering this product.

Moderate identified

The most serious documented interaction for these ingredients is Moderate. Check your medications for a personalized result.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Shilajit.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Moderate.
  • Some involve high-stakes drug classes: diabetes medications.
  • For scale: 86 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

If you take antidiabetes medications — metformin, glibenclamide, insulin, or any other blood sugar medication — double-check with your doctor or pharmacist before using this product. Shilajit may increase the glucose-lowering effect and raise your risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia).

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.

Shilajit by youtheory men is a single-ingredient supplement with limited proven benefits for the conditions it's marketed for. The main caution is that it may lower blood sugar when combined with diabetes medications.

If you take any antidiabetes drugs, or if you're pregnant, breastfeeding, or considering either, check with your own doctor or pharmacist before starting.

Antidiabetes Drugs

Taking shilajit with antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Most human and animal research shows that shilajit can decrease fasting plasma glucose levels. In an animal model, shilajit 100 mg per kg daily enhanced the glucose-lowering ability of both glibenclamide and metformin when given in combination over a 4 week period. Monitor blood glucose levels closely. Dose adjustments might be necessary.

Shilajit by youtheory men: Common Questions

Does Shilajit by youtheory men interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Shilajit has a known interaction with 86 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Shilajit contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Can I take this if I have type 2 diabetes?
Not without checking with your doctor or pharmacist first. Shilajit can boost the blood-sugar-lowering effect of diabetes medications, raising your risk of low blood sugar. Your provider can advise whether it's right for you and whether your medication dose needs adjustment.
Is shilajit safe during pregnancy?
No — there isn't enough safety data, so it's best avoided in pregnancy. One case of high blood pressure related to mineral imbalance was reported in a pregnant woman taking shilajit, though a direct link wasn't proven. Talk with your doctor before taking it if you're pregnant or planning to become pregnant.
Can I take this while breastfeeding?
Safety while breastfeeding is unknown, so it's best to avoid it. If you're breastfeeding and interested in shilajit, ask your doctor or pharmacist for personalized advice.
What is shilajit, exactly?
Shilajit is a mineral-rich substance used traditionally in Ayurvedic medicine. It's often sourced from mountain rocks in high-altitude regions. Make sure to use a purified, tested brand, because unpurified shilajit can contain heavy metals or other contaminants.
Has shilajit been proven to work for sexual dysfunction or athletic performance?
Not yet — we hold insufficient reliable evidence to rate it for those uses. While it's marketed for them, the science doesn't yet support those claims strongly enough for us to say it works.
Can shilajit cause side effects?
Most people tolerate it well, but rare side effects have been reported. Headache is the most common. One case of a severe allergic reaction — including hives and anaphylaxis — occurred after a higher dose. If you have any signs of an allergic reaction, seek immediate medical help.
