HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Super Spirulina Plus by Body Ecology
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
Super Spirulina Plus contains one active ingredient: sodium. It also includes a fermented blend as an inactive ingredient.
Sodium is an essential mineral your body needs for nerve and muscle function, but the amount matters—too much from supplements or very salty food can strain your heart and raise blood pressure.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The evidence we hold doesn't establish how well Super Spirulina Plus works for general wellness or any common condition. Sodium itself has some medical uses—it's likely effective for cystic fibrosis and possibly effective for certain kidney complications from amphotericin B—but those are specialized medical settings, not general supplementation.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Sodium is well tolerated when you eat normal dietary amounts. The safety data advises caution: too much sodium is linked to high blood pressure, heart strain, and kidney disease.
The facts note that usual dietary sodium is fine, but you should avoid sodium supplements or very high intake without talking to your doctor first. Rare serious side effects from excess sodium include worsened cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and kidney disease.
Pregnancy and lactation safety data are mixed: one rating says likely safe, another says possibly unsafe—talk to your doctor or pharmacist for personalized advice before using this product if you're pregnant or nursing.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before you start, double-check your medications against lithium and blood pressure drugs (antihypertensives)—those are your biggest concerns. Also flag any corticosteroids, didanosine, sodium phosphate laxatives, tolvaptan, or other sodium-containing medicines you take.
If you're on any of these, a pharmacist needs to weigh the benefit against the risk before you add sodium supplements.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
If you're on blood pressure medication, take lithium, use corticosteroids, or have kidney or heart concerns, you need to check with your pharmacist before adding a sodium supplement. Otherwise, plain dietary sodium from food is fine and preferable to supplementing.

Super Spirulina Plus by Body Ecology Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Body Ecology's Super Spirulina Plus contains sodium, which interacts with over 200 medications.
The most serious concern is with lithium (used for bipolar disorder): changing how much sodium you eat can shift lithium levels in your blood, potentially causing toxicity or loss of effectiveness. High sodium intake can also reduce how well blood pressure medications work, and it raises the risk of dangerously high sodium levels in your blood (hypernatremia) if you're also taking corticosteroids, didanosine (an HIV medicine), sodium phosphate laxatives, tolvaptan, or other sodium-containing drugs.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Additionally, sodium interacts with several other drug categories: it can interfere with blood pressure control, worsen electrolyte balance in people on certain medications, and complicate sodium regulation in those taking drugs that affect how your kidneys handle sodium. The interaction applies mainly if you're taking extra sodium beyond what's in normal food.
Although we checked sodium thoroughly, please use the medication checker below to see if any of your specific drugs are affected. Altogether, these interactions span 203 individual medications.

For each ingredient in Super Spirulina Plus with known interactions, here are the types of medications it can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Sodium
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theoretically, a high intake of dietary sodium might reduce the effectiveness of antihypertensive drugs.
High intake of dietary sodium can increase systolic and diastolic blood pressure. Also, high intake of sodium may necessitate increased use of antihypertensive medications to achieve blood pressure control in some patients, such as those with chronic kidney disease.
Corticosteroids
Concomitant use of mineralocorticoids and some glucocorticoids with sodium supplements might increase the risk of hypernatremia.
Mineralocorticoids and some glucocorticoids (corticosteroids) cause sodium retention. This effect is dose-related and depends on mineralocorticoid potency. It is most common with hydrocortisone, cortisone, and fludrocortisone, followed by prednisone and prednisolone.
Didanosine (Videx)
Concomitant use of didanosine with additional sodium from dietary or supplemental sources may increase the risk of hypernatremia.
Didanosine formulations contain a significant amount of sodium.
Lithium
Altering dietary intake of sodium might alter the levels and clinical effects of lithium.
High sodium intake can reduce plasma concentrations of lithium by increasing lithium excretion. Reducing sodium intake can significantly increase plasma concentrations of lithium and cause lithium toxicity in patients being treated with lithium carbonate. Stabilizing sodium intake is shown to reduce the percentage of patients with lithium level fluctuations above 0.8 mEq/L. Patients taking lithium should avoid significant alterations in their dietary intake of sodium.
Sodium Phosphates
Theoretically, concomitant use of sodium phosphate with sodium supplements might increase the risk of hypernatremia.
Use of high doses (> 45 mL in 24 hours) of sodium phosphate, such as those used for bowel cleansing before surgery, can lead to serious electrolyte disturbances, including hypernatremia. The risk of hypernatremia is highest in the elderly and people with other risk factors for electrolyte disturbances.
Sodium-Containing Drugs
Concomitant use of sodium-containing drugs with additional sodium from dietary or supplemental sources may increase the risk of hypernatremia and long-term sodium-related complications.
The Chronic Disease Risk Reduction (CDRR) intake level of 2.3 grams of sodium daily indicates the intake at which it is believed that chronic disease risk increases for the apparently healthy population. Some medications contain high quantities of sodium. When used in conjunction with sodium supplements or high-sodium diets, the CDRR may be exceeded. Additionally, concomitant use may increase the risk for hypernatremia; this risk is highest in the elderly and people with other risk factors for electrolyte disturbances.
Tolvaptan (Samsca)
Theoretically, concomitant use of tolvaptan with sodium might increase the risk of hypernatremia.
Tolvaptan is a vasopressin receptor 2 antagonist that is used to increase sodium levels in patients with hyponatremia. Patients taking tolvaptan should use caution with the use of sodium salts such as sodium chloride.
