HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Total Calm with Relora by Solaray
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
Total Calm with Relora contains two active ingredients. L-theanine is an amino acid that's thought to promote relaxation without causing drowsiness.
The product also contains Relora, but we don't have detailed information on file about that ingredient's role. The capsule also holds several inactive ingredients — modified food starch, modified corn starch, cellulose, silica, and magnesium stearate — which are fillers and binders.
Does it work?
Not established
For L-theanine, the evidence shows it's possibly effective for cognitive function, meaning some studies support it but the proof isn't airtight yet. For other uses — age-related cognitive decline, Alzheimer's disease, generalized anxiety, and OCD — there isn't enough reliable evidence in our data to say whether it works.
We also have no effectiveness information on file for Relora.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
L-theanine is generally well tolerated in healthy adults when used for short periods, but we don't have good long-term safety data. Some people report headaches, drowsiness, more sleep, or more vivid dreams.
One child had a mild facial tic after starting L-theanine, but it went away when she stopped; she'd had tics before, so the link wasn't clear. The safety data advises against using L-theanine during pregnancy and while breastfeeding because there isn't enough information to know it's safe.
Talk with your doctor or pharmacist for personalized advice if you're pregnant, planning pregnancy, or nursing.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before you take this product, double-check if you're on blood pressure medications (the most serious concern here) or any sedating drugs like sleep aids or anti-anxiety medication. No interactions are documented for Relora — we simply don't have the data to check it.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Total Calm with Relora may be worth considering if you're looking for a relaxation support and your medications don't interact with L-theanine. If you take blood pressure medicine, any sedating drug, or anything serotonin-related, check your exact medications with the tool on this page first.

Total Calm with Relora by Solaray Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Solaray's Total Calm with Relora contains L-theanine, which has documented interactions with several medication types.
The most serious concern is with blood pressure medications (antihypertensives) — L-theanine may lower blood pressure on its own, and combining it with your blood pressure drugs could push your pressure too low.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
L-theanine also has minor interactions with sedating medications (CNS depressants, like sleep aids or anxiety drugs). It may add to their drowsiness effect, though it's not clear how often this matters in real life.
Additionally, there are conflicting study results about whether L-theanine affects serotonin levels, but no cases of serotonin syndrome have been reported with it.
We could not check the second ingredient, Relora, because we hold no interaction data for it. Altogether, these interactions span 563 individual medications.

For each ingredient in Total Calm with Relora with known interactions, here are the types of medications it can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
L-Theanine
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theanine might lower blood pressure, potentiating the effects of antihypertensive drugs.
Animal research shows that theanine can lower blood pressure in spontaneously hypertensive animals. Theoretically, concomitant use of theanine and antihypertensive drugs might potentiate the antihypertensive activity.
Cns Depressants
Theoretically, theanine might have additive sedative effects when used in conjunction with CNS depressants. However, it is unclear if this concern is clinically relevant.
Theoretically, theanine may compete with glutamate and/or increase plasma gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) levels, which could cause CNS depression. In one clinical study, some subjects taking oral theanine reported drowsiness.
Serotonergic Drugs
Clinical studies regarding the effects of L-theanine on serotonin levels are conflicting. Some studies suggest it can increase serotonin levels in the brain while others report that it may decrease them. Nevertheless, there have been no reports of l-theanine being a causative agent in serotonergic-related side effects or serotonin syndrome.
