Zenergy Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Zenergy against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Zenergy by Purity Products
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
Zenergy contains four active ingredients. Suntheanine L-Theanine is an amino acid form of theanine.
Sensoril Withania somnifera extract is ashwagandha, an herbal adaptogen. Passion Flower extract comes from Passiflora incarnata.
Holy Basil extract is derived from Ocimum sanctum. The product also contains inactive ingredients—vegetable cellulose (the capsule), rice flour, and magnesium stearate—which serve as fillers and binders.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Theanine is possibly effective for cognitive function, but the evidence is insufficient to rate it for age-related cognitive decline, Alzheimer disease, or anxiety disorders. Ashwagandha is possibly effective for insomnia, anxiety, stress, and generalized anxiety disorder, though evidence is insufficient for bipolar disorder.
Passion Flower is possibly effective for insomnia and pre-procedural anxiety, but not rated for alcohol use disorder or benzodiazepine withdrawal. Holy Basil has insufficient evidence for all conditions studied in our data, including generalized anxiety disorder, asthma, headache, respiratory infections, dental plaque, and diabetes.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
All four ingredients are generally well tolerated short-term in healthy adults, but long-term safety data are limited. Theanine may cause headaches, drowsiness, increased sleep duration, or increased dreaming.
Ashwagandha is well-tolerated orally at typical doses, though it can cause diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and drowsiness; rare serious cases of liver damage and hepatitis have been reported. Passion Flower is well-tolerated but commonly causes confusion, dizziness, and sedation; a case of severe nausea, vomiting, and heart rhythm changes was reported at high doses.
Holy Basil commonly causes loose stools and nausea in a small number of trial participants. Regarding pregnancy: theanine and passion flower lack sufficient safety data, so they are best avoided during pregnancy; ashwagandha is likely unsafe due to traditional concerns about miscarriage; and holy basil is possibly unsafe.
None of the four ingredients has adequate safety information for breastfeeding, so all should be avoided while nursing.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking Zenergy, check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take any blood pressure medication, diabetes medication, sedatives or other CNS depressants, benzodiazepines, blood thinners (anticoagulants or antiplatelet drugs), immune-suppressing drugs, thyroid hormones, pentobarbital, or any medication that affects the liver—ashwagandha's liver interactions carry the highest documented concern. Additionally, if you take medications processed through the liver (CYP3A4 or CYP1A2 systems) or affected by OATP transporters, let your healthcare provider know you're considering this product.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Zenergy combines four herbal and amino acid ingredients studied for anxiety, sleep, and cognitive support, but interactions with common medications—especially blood pressure drugs, diabetes medications, sedatives, blood thinners, and thyroid hormones—are a real concern. If you take any prescription medications, check them against this product's interaction data before starting.
Pregnant or breastfeeding individuals should avoid it. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether Zenergy is right for you.

HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Zenergy by Purity Products contains four active ingredients—Suntheanine L-Theanine, Sensoril Withania somnifera extract (ashwagandha), Passion Flower extract, and Holy Basil extract—that together interact with a substantial number of medications.
The most serious concern is ashwagandha's potential to cause liver damage when combined with hepatotoxic drugs (medications known to harm the liver), a Moderate severity interaction. Altogether, these interactions span 1,437 individual medications.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Both theanine and ashwagandha may lower blood pressure, which could potentiate the effects of antihypertensive drugs (blood pressure medications)—a Moderate concern for each. Ashwagandha also carries Moderate interactions with blood sugar medications (antidiabetes drugs), immune-suppressing drugs (immunosuppressants), anti-anxiety benzodiazepines, CNS depressants (sedatives and similar drugs), and thyroid hormones.
Passion Flower and holy basil add Moderate concerns with CNS depressants as well. Holy basil additionally interacts with blood thinners (anticoagulant and antiplatelet drugs) and may increase sedation with pentobarbital.
Several ingredients carry Minor interactions through effects on liver enzyme systems: ashwagandha on CYP1A2 substrates, and passion flower on CYP3A4 substrates and OATP transporters. Theanine and passion flower have Minor interactions with serotonergic drugs and CNS depressants, respectively, though clinical significance remains unclear.
Before starting Zenergy, check your exact medications with the search tool on this page, especially if you take blood pressure medication, diabetes medication, sedatives, blood thinners, immune suppressants, or thyroid hormone.

Sensoril Withania somnifera extract
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, taking ashwagandha with antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
There is preliminary clinical evidence suggesting that ashwagandha might lower blood glucose levels. Theoretically, ashwagandha might have additive effects when used with antidiabetes drugs and increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theoretically, taking ashwagandha with antihypertensive drugs might increase the risk of hypotension.
Animal research suggests that ashwagandha might lower systolic and diastolic blood pressure. Theoretically, ashwagandha might have additive effects when used with antihypertensive drugs and increase the risk of hypotension.
Benzodiazepines
Theoretically, taking ashwagandha might increase the sedative effects of benzodiazepines.
There is preliminary evidence that ashwagandha might have an additive effect with diazepam (Valium) and clonazepam (Klonopin). This may also occur with other benzodiazepines.
Cns Depressants
Theoretically, taking ashwagandha might increase the sedative effects of CNS depressants.
Ashwagandha seems to have sedative effects. Theoretically, this may potentiate the effects of barbiturates, other sedatives, and anxiolytics.
Hepatotoxic Drugs
Theoretically, taking ashwagandha with hepatotoxic drugs might increase the risk of liver damage.
Ashwagandha has been linked to cases of acute hepatitis, liver failure, hepatic encephalopathy, autoimmune hepatitis, the need for liver transplantation, and death due to liver failure.
Immunosuppressants
Theoretically, taking ashwagandha might decrease the effects of immunosuppressants.
Ashwagandha has demonstrated immunostimulant effects in humans. Animal research has shown that ashwagandha can attenuate the immunosuppression caused by cyclophosphamide.
Thyroid Hormone
Ashwagandha might increase the effects and adverse effects of thyroid hormone.
Concomitant use of ashwagandha with thyroid hormones may cause additive therapeutic and adverse effects. Preliminary clinical research and animal studies suggest that ashwagandha boosts thyroid hormone synthesis and secretion. In one clinical study, ashwagandha increased triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4) levels by 41.5% and 19.6%, respectively, and reduced serum TSH levels by 17.4% from baseline in adults with subclinical hypothyroidism.
Cytochrome P450 1A2 (Cyp1A2) Substrates
Theoretically, ashwagandha might decrease the levels and clinical effects of CYP1A2 substrates.
In vitro research shows that ashwagandha extract induces CYP1A2 enzymes.
Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates
Theoretically, ashwagandha might decrease the levels and clinical effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that ashwagandha extract induces CYP3A4 enzymes.
Serotonergic Drugs
Some animal studies have reported that ashwagandha can enhance serotonergic transmission by altering certain serotonin (5-HT) receptors. However, there is no evidence to suggest that ashwagandha increases the risk of serotonin-related effects, and there have been no published case reports of serotonin syndrome when combined with other serotonergic drugs. Nevertheless, due to the lack of extensive studies on the matter and the fact that ashwagandha appears to affect serotonergic pathways, it would be prudent to exercise caution when combining it with drugs that affect serotonin. Passion Flower (Passiflora incarnata) extract
Cns Depressants
Concomitant use of passion flower with sedative drugs might cause additive effects and side effects.
Research in animals and humans shows that passion flower has sedative effects which can be additive when used with sedative medications like lorazepam.
Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates
Theoretically, passion flower might decrease the effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research suggests that passion flower can induce CYP3A4 enzymes, albeit to a much lower degree than rifampin, a known CYP3A4 inducer.
Organic Anion-Transporting Polypeptide Substrates (Oatp)
Theoretically, passion flower might reduce the bioavailability of OATP2B1 and OATP1A2 substrates.
In vitro research shows that the passion flower constituents apigenin and vitexin inhibit OATP2B1 and OATP1A2. This inhibition may be dose-dependent. One specific high-flavonoid passion flower extract (Valverde) seems to inhibit OATP2B1 and OATP1A2, while another extract with a lower flavonoid concentration (Arkocaps) shows less potent inhibition. OATPs are responsible for the uptake of drugs and other compounds into the body; however, the specific activities of OATP2B1 and OATP1A2 are not well characterized.
Suntheanine L-Theanine
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theanine might lower blood pressure, potentiating the effects of antihypertensive drugs.
Animal research shows that theanine can lower blood pressure in spontaneously hypertensive animals. Theoretically, concomitant use of theanine and antihypertensive drugs might potentiate the antihypertensive activity.
Cns Depressants
Theoretically, theanine might have additive sedative effects when used in conjunction with CNS depressants. However, it is unclear if this concern is clinically relevant.
Theoretically, theanine may compete with glutamate and/or increase plasma gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) levels, which could cause CNS depression. In one clinical study, some subjects taking oral theanine reported drowsiness.
Serotonergic Drugs
Clinical studies regarding the effects of L-theanine on serotonin levels are conflicting. Some studies suggest it can increase serotonin levels in the brain while others report that it may decrease them. Nevertheless, there have been no reports of l-theanine being a causative agent in serotonergic-related side effects or serotonin syndrome.
Holy Basil (Ocimum sanctum) extract
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, holy basil seed oil might increase the risk of bleeding when used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
Animal research shows that holy basil seed oil can prolong bleeding time, possibly due to inhibition of platelet aggregation. However, it is not known if this occurs in humans.
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, holy basil might increase the risk of hypoglycemia when taken with antidiabetes drugs.
Small clinical studies show that taking holy basil can decrease fasting blood glucose and other measures of glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes.
Pentobarbital (Nembutal)
Theoretically, holy basil seed oil might increase the sedative effects of pentobarbital.
Animal research shows that holy basil seed oil increases pentobarbitone-induced sleeping time. However, it is not known if this occurs in humans or if this applies to other barbiturates or sedatives.
