Reishi Mushroom and Empagliflozin

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIDIABETES DRUGS

Why this applies to Empagliflozin

Empagliflozin falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Reishi Mushroom interacts with.

Theoretically, reishi mushroom might have additive effects with antidiabetes drugs.
Animal research suggests that reishi mushroom decreases blood sugar. However, in patients with type 2 diabetes, taking reishi mushroom does not reduce fasting glucose levels, and its effects on glycated hemoglobin are inconsistent.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the short version: there's a theoretical concern that reishi mushroom could nudge your blood sugar down a little, and since Jardiance (empagliflozin) is already lowering it, the worry is that the two together could add up. In plain terms, your blood sugar could dip lower than expected, which might show up as shakiness, sweating, dizziness, or feeling unusually tired.

But I want to keep this in perspective. The evidence is weak. It comes mostly from animal studies, and in actual people with type 2 diabetes, reishi did not reliably lower fasting blood sugar. So for most folks this is more of a 'keep an eye on it' situation than a real alarm. If you do take both, check your sugars a bit more often at first, and chat with your pharmacist or doctor before starting reishi.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Empagliflozin page

“Almost everything on this page can nudge blood sugar in someone taking empagliflozin (Jardiance) for type 2 diabetes, heart failure, or kidney protection, and two entries deserve genuine caution before anything else. Siberian cocklebur has caused severe low blood sugar in humans and should not be combined with any glucose-lowering medi…”

About Reishi Mushroom

What is Reishi Mushroom?

Reishi Mushroom
  • Immune support
  • Fatigue and general well-being
  • Stress and sleep
  • Inflammation
  • Heart and cholesterol health

Reishi is a traditional Asian mushroom widely used to support the immune system and overall wellness. Human evidence for most of its claimed benefits is limited or low-quality, so it should not replace proven treatments. It is generally well tolerated for short-term use, but check with your pharmacist or doctor before starting, especially if you are pregnant, nursing, or take other medicines.

About Empagliflozin

What Is Empagliflozin Used For?

Brand name: Jardiance

Jardiance (empagliflozin) tablets are approved for several important uses in adults. It reduces the risk of cardiovascular death and hospitalization in adults with heart failure. It also slows the progression of chronic kidney disease by reducing the risk of serious kidney decline, end-stage kidney disease, cardiovascular death, and hospitalization. In adults with type 2 diabetes and established cardiovascular disease, Jardiance reduces the risk of cardiovascular death.

Jardiance is also used — alongside diet and exercise — to improve blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes in adults and children aged 10 and older. It is not recommended for blood sugar control in type 1 diabetes (it may raise the risk of a dangerous condition called diabetic ketoacidosis) or in type 2 diabetes patients with severely reduced kidney function.
