Reishi Mushroom and Carvedilol

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS

Why this applies to Carvedilol

Carvedilol falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Reishi Mushroom interacts with.

Theoretically, concurrent use of reishi mushroom with antihypertensive drugs might increase the risk of hypotension.
Reishi mushroom has shown hypotensive activity in animal research. Clinical evidence suggests that reishi mushroom reduces blood pressure in some, but not all, patients with hypertension.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: carvedilol already works to lower your blood pressure and slow your heart rate. Reishi mushroom has shown some blood pressure lowering activity of its own, mostly in animal studies and a few small human reports. So when you stack the two together, the worry is that your blood pressure could drop a little more than expected.

What might that feel like? Things like dizziness, lightheadedness when you stand up, unusual tiredness, or a slow heartbeat. I want to be honest though, this concern is mostly theoretical and based on weak evidence, so it doesn't happen to everyone. If you'd like to try reishi, that's a conversation worth having with your pharmacist or doctor first, and it's smart to keep an eye on your blood pressure when you start.

  • Heart and cholesterol health

Reishi is a traditional Asian mushroom widely used to support the immune system and overall wellness. About Carvedilol

What Is Carvedilol Used For?

Brand names: Coreg, Coreg CR

Carvedilol is used to treat three main conditions: mild to severe chronic heart failure, high blood pressure (hypertension), and left ventricular dysfunction (reduced pumping ability of the heart's main chamber) in people who have survived a heart attack. For heart failure, it is typically used alongside other medications such as diuretics, ACE inhibitors, and digitalis to help improve survival and reduce hospital stays.

For people who have had a heart attack with reduced heart function, carvedilol is used to lower the risk of dying from cardiovascular causes. For high blood pressure, it can be used alone or combined with other blood pressure medications.
