Acetaminophen, Butalbital, Caffeine falls under BARBITURATES — the group Adrue interacts with.

Animal research suggests that taking adrue in combination with sodium thiopental increases total sleep time three-fold compared to the effects of sodium thiopental alone. Theoretically, concomitant use of adrue and barbiturates might increase the risk of drowsiness and motor reflex depression. Some barbiturates include amobarbital (Amytal), butabarbital (Butisol), mephobarbital (Mebaral), pentobarbital (Nembutal), phenobarbital (Luminal), secobarbital (Seconal), and others.

The piece of this combo that matters here is the butalbital, which is a barbiturate that calms the nervous system. Adrue has shown calming, sedative-like effects in lab and animal studies. So the worry is simply that two relaxing things stacked together could add up. In one animal study, adrue roughly tripled the sleep time caused by a barbiturate.

In real life, that might mean more drowsiness, grogginess, slowed reflexes, or feeling unsteady with this headache medicine. I'd want you to be careful about driving or anything requiring focus. Keep in mind this is theoretical and based only on animal data, not human studies, so don't panic. Just check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

What Is Acetaminophen, Butalbital, and Caffeine Used For?

Brand names: Tecnal, Esgic Plus, Fiogesic, Triad, Repan, Esgic, Fioricet

This combination product — available as capsules, tablets, and oral solution under various names including Fioricet — is used to relieve the symptoms of tension headaches (also called muscle contraction headaches).

All supported products, including Fioricet capsules and the oral solution, share this same indication. Because butalbital can be habit-forming, extended or repeated use is not recommended, and these products are not established as safe or effective for treating headaches that come back frequently over time.
