Why this applies to Clonazepam

Clonazepam falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Aegeline interacts with.

Aegeline inhibits cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) activity in vitro. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans. Theoretically, aegeline may increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4. Some drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 include lovastatin (Mevacor), ketoconazole (Nizoral), itraconazole (Sporanox), fexofenadine (Allegra), triazolam (Halcion), and numerous others. Use aegeline cautiously or avoid in patients taking these drugs.

Here's the basic idea with clonazepam (Klonopin) and aegeline. Your body uses a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to help clear clonazepam out of your system. In lab studies, aegeline appears to slow that enzyme down. If it did the same thing in people, clonazepam could build up a bit more than usual, which in theory means stronger effects like extra drowsiness, dizziness, grogginess, or feeling unsteady on your feet.

I want to be honest though: this is only a theoretical concern from test-tube research, and it has not actually been reported in humans, so it's rated minor. The bigger issue is aegeline itself, since it has been linked to serious liver injury and regulators have warned against it. I'd skip it and check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

Aegeline is a compound originally identified in the bael tree (Aegle marmelos) that gained attention because it was added to some weight-loss and workout supplements. It is best known for being linked to serious liver injury in a product called OxyELITE Pro, and U.S. regulators warned against products containing it. There is no good evidence it safely helps with weight loss, and it should generally be avoided.

What Is Clonazepam Used For?

Clonazepam is approved to treat several types of seizures — including Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (a severe form of epilepsy), akinetic seizures (sudden loss of muscle tone), myoclonic seizures (sudden muscle jerks), and absence seizures (brief lapses of awareness) in patients who haven't responded to other medicines.

It is also approved for panic disorder, with or without agoraphobia (fear of situations that might cause panic). Panic disorder involves repeated, unexpected panic attacks along with ongoing worry about having more attacks.
