PHOTOSENSITIZING DRUGS
Why this applies to Bupivacaine, Meloxicam
Bupivacaine, Meloxicam falls under PHOTOSENSITIZING DRUGS — the group Alfalfa interacts with.
Animal research suggests that excessive doses of alfalfa may increase photosensitivity, possibly due to its chlorophyll content. It is unclear if this effect would be clinically relevant in humans.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the simple version of what we have on file for the Zynrelef kit (which combines bupivacaine, a numbing medicine, with meloxicam, an anti-inflammatory). Some medicines can make your skin a little more sensitive to sunlight, and meloxicam is the part of this combo that falls into that group. Alfalfa may, in theory, add to that sun sensitivity because of compounds like chlorophyll it contains.
I want to be honest with you though: this concern comes only from animal studies using large amounts of alfalfa, and it's not clear it matters at all in people. Food amounts are very unlikely to do anything. If you're using concentrated alfalfa supplements, just mention it to your pharmacist and use normal sun protection while you heal.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Bupivacaine, Meloxicam page
“Zynrelef pairs bupivacaine, a numbing anesthetic, with meloxicam, an NSAID, placed into the surgical wound to ease pain after an operation, so the people using it are fresh out of surgery. Two of the five major-rated interactions are beer and wine, since alcohol with an NSAID raises the risk of stomach bleeding, and the rest of the maj…”
