Here's the idea behind this one. Norgestrel is a progestin-only birth control pill, and it works by keeping your hormone signals steady enough to block ovulation and thicken cervical mucus. Alfalfa contains plant-based estrogen-like compounds (coumestrol and isoflavones). The concern is that adding extra weak estrogen activity could, in theory, throw off the hormonal balance this pill relies on, possibly making it less reliable for preventing pregnancy.

I want to be honest about the strength of this: it's theoretical, based on how alfalfa behaves in the body, not on real-world cases of pill failure. A little alfalfa in a salad is unlikely to matter. Concentrated alfalfa supplements are the bigger question mark. Before starting one, check with your pharmacist or doctor so your birth control keeps working as expected.

What Is Progestin-Only (norethindrone) Oral Contraceptives Used For?

Norethindrone progestin-only pills — sometimes called the "mini-pill" — are used solely to prevent pregnancy. They do not contain estrogen, which makes them an option for women who cannot or prefer not to use estrogen-containing contraceptives.

When taken perfectly (same time every day, no missed pills), fewer than 1 in 100 women will become pregnant in the first year. With typical use, that number rises to about 9 in 100 — mostly because of late or skipped pills. Consistency is everything with this method.
