Drug & supplement interaction

Algin + Levofloxacin (ophthalmic)

Levofloxacin (ophthalmic) brand name: Levofloxacin.

No Known Interaction
The bottom line No known interaction

We found no known interaction between Algin and Levofloxacin (ophthalmic) in our sources. Absence of a documented interaction is not the same as proven safety, and does not guarantee one does not exist. Do not start, stop, or change a medication or supplement based on this page; confirm with your pharmacist or doctor first. Additionally, although there is no interaction, there is a timing consideration — Algin can reduce how much Levofloxacin (ophthalmic) you absorb if they are taken together, so they should be spaced apart.

Algin and Levofloxacin (ophthalmic)

We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.

No Known Interaction Found

We did not find a documented interaction between Levofloxacin (ophthalmic) and Algin in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — there is often limited research on supplements and herbal products, especially around drug interactions.

If you decide to take both, the practical routine is simple: add one new thing at a time and note the date you started it. If the combination is going to disagree with you, it usually shows in the first days to a couple of weeks — and a start date turns “I’ve been feeling off” into something a pharmacist can actually work with. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.

Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.

Breastfeeding Use caution Limited safety data; use only with guidance from your healthcare provider.

Safety guidance is general; always confirm with your pharmacist or doctor for your situation.

How we checked

Why No Interaction Is Listed for Levofloxacin (ophthalmic)

Interactions in our licensed database are recorded against drug classes, not just single drug names. Levofloxacin (ophthalmic) is filed under 3 classifications — quinolone antibiotics, organic anion-transporting polypeptide substrates (oatp), antibiotic drugs. Algin has documented interactions with 1 drug class — the most serious being oral drugs (minor) — and none of Levofloxacin (ophthalmic)’s classifications are among them.

Classification data comes from our licensed Natural Medicines dataset. A medication can belong to classes beyond those recorded there, so this describes how the check was run — it is not a safety guarantee.

From the ADVERSE REACTIONS section of the FDA label for Levofloxacin (ophthalmic). Read the label on DailyMed › Algin’s licensed record lists no adverse effects our clinical vocabulary could match, so there is no Algin side to compare — that is a limit of the record, not a statement that Algin has no side effects.

Timing matters

No Interaction — But Take Algin and Levofloxacin (ophthalmic) a Few Hours Apart

Levofloxacin (ophthalmic) is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic, and it is absorbed best on its own. Algin can bind to it in the stomach so that less of the medicine reaches your bloodstream. That is not an interaction in the usual sense — nothing harmful happens when they meet — but taken at the same time, your dose can effectively become a smaller one.

The fix is simple: separate the two by about 4 hours. Take Levofloxacin (ophthalmic) first, on its own, and keep Algin for later in the day.

Where this comes from: this is HelloPharmacist editorial guidance, not a licensed interaction record — it applies established absorption pharmacology to fluoroquinolone antibiotics, whose FDA labels state a separation requirement of their own. The Levofloxacin (ophthalmic) label is summarised on our Levofloxacin (ophthalmic) drug page, and the full label is on DailyMed. Reviewed by the HelloPharmacist pharmacy team. If you already take them together, do not change your medicine on your own; ask your pharmacist how to space them.

About Algin

What is Algin?

Algin
  • Heartburn and acid reflux (in combination products)
  • Lowering cholesterol
  • Digestive health and feeling full
  • Use as a thickener and binder in foods and medicines
  • Weight management

Algin (alginate) is a fiber-like substance from brown seaweed that is widely used as a thickener, gel, and binder in foods and medicines. Its best-known medical use is in heartburn products, where it forms a barrier that helps reduce acid reflux; evidence for other uses like lowering cholesterol or weight loss is weaker. It is generally considered safe in food amounts, but check with your pharmacist before using it as a supplement, especially if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Extract from brown seaweed (brown algae) · Tablets, capsules, chewable tablets, liquid suspensions (often combined with antacids), powder used in foods

An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether Algin is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our Algin record says about it on its own.

Algin: dosing

There is no single official supplement dose for algin. The amount varies a lot depending on the product and how it is used—for example, a chewable heartburn tablet, a liquid suspension, or a fiber powder will each have different directions. The best approach is to follow the directions on the product label and take it with a full glass of water. Do not assume "more is better," especially with fiber-type products.
