Here's the gist: American spikenard is traditionally thought to make you sweat a little more (that's the "diaphoretic" idea). Your hydrochlorothiazide is a water pill that already pulls extra fluid and salt out through your urine. Put the two together and you could lose a bit more fluid and minerals than usual.

If that happened, you might notice things like feeling dizzy or lightheaded (especially standing up), unusual thirst, muscle cramps, or weakness, which can come from low potassium or sodium. To be honest, the evidence here is very weak and the concern is mostly theoretical, so for most people it's a minor issue. Still, since spikenard hasn't been well studied, I'd run it by your pharmacist or doctor before adding it, and keep up with fluids in the meantime.

What Is Hydrochlorothiazide Used For?

Brand names: Esidrix, Hydro, Microzide, HydroDiuril, Hydro-D, Oretic, Aquazide H, Aquazide, HCTZ

Hydrochlorothiazide treats high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and children, either alone or combined with other blood pressure medicines. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of strokes and heart attacks.

It also treats edema (fluid buildup) linked to congestive heart failure, hepatic cirrhosis (liver scarring), and kidney conditions including nephrotic syndrome. Hydrochlorothiazide tablets are additionally indicated for edema caused by corticosteroid or estrogen therapy, and edema from acute glomerulonephritis or chronic renal failure. Inzirqo (the oral suspension) is specifically approved for both hypertension and edema in adult and pediatric patients.
