Bael + Warfarin
Warfarin brand name: Warfarin.
Warfarin falls into 2 drug categories that Bael can interact with; the most serious is rated minor. Bael extract and its constituent marmesinin inhibited cytochrome P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) activity in vitro.

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 2 Interactions?
Bael interacts with whole categories of medication. Warfarin falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Bael in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Minor).
CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES
1 of 2Why this applies to Warfarin
Warfarin falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Bael interacts with.
Some drugs metabolized by CYP1A2 include amitriptyline (Elavil), haloperidol (Haldol), ondansetron (Zofran), propranolol (Inderal), theophylline (Theo-Dur, others), verapamil (Calan, Isoptin, others), and others. Use bael cautiously or avoid in patients taking these drugs.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist for warfarin: lab and animal studies suggest bael may slow down an enzyme called CYP1A2. Warfarin is partly handled by that enzyme, so in theory bael could let a bit more warfarin linger in your system. With a blood thinner, that nudge could push your INR higher and raise the risk of bruising or bleeding, like nosebleeds, bleeding gums, or blood in your urine or stool.
That said, this interaction has only been seen in test tubes, never reported in real people, and it's rated minor. Warfarin is a narrow-window drug where small shifts matter, so don't panic, but do loop in your pharmacist or doctor before adding bael, especially as a concentrated supplement rather than an occasional food.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
2 of 2Warfarin also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.
Some drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 include lovastatin (Mevacor), ketoconazole (Nizoral), itraconazole (Sporanox), fexofenadine (Allegra), triazolam (Halcion), and numerous others. Use bael cautiously or avoid in patients taking these drugs.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the situation with bael and your warfarin. In lab dishes, bael and two of its plant compounds (marmelosin and marmesinin) slowed down an enzyme called CYP3A4, which is one of the pathways your body uses to clear warfarin. In theory, blocking that pathway could let warfarin build up a bit, nudging your blood thinning higher. With warfarin that matters, because it's a narrow-margin medication. Even small shifts can raise your INR and your risk of bleeding, like easy bruising, nosebleeds, or bleeding gums.
That said, this is only seen in test tubes so far, never reported in real people, so I wouldn't panic. Just don't add a bael supplement without checking with your pharmacist or doctor first, and keep up with your INR testing.

What These Ratings Mean
Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.
Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.
Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.
Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.
- LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
- ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
- PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
- UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Warfarin page
“People take warfarin to prevent dangerous clots, and many are the same people reaching for glucosamine for sore joints or a multivitamin containing vitamin K, which makes this a list that deserves genuine respect. Of the 361 supplements on file for warfarin, 16 carry a major rating, and the danger runs in both directions: some add to w…”

About Bael
What is Bael?
- Diarrhea and dysentery
- Indigestion and other digestive complaints
- Constipation
- Blood sugar support
- General wellness in traditional medicine
Bael is a fruit-bearing tree long used in traditional Indian (Ayurvedic) medicine, mostly for digestive problems like diarrhea and indigestion. Modern human evidence for its medicinal benefits is very limited, so it should be viewed mainly as a food and traditional remedy rather than a proven treatment. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using bael as a supplement, especially if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have a health condition.
About Warfarin
What Is Warfarin Used For?
Brand name: Warfarin
Warfarin sodium tablets and Jantoven tablets are both used to prevent and treat venous thrombosis (blood clots in the veins) and pulmonary embolism (a clot in the lungs). They are also used to prevent clot-related complications in people with atrial fibrillation (an irregular heart rhythm) or who have had a heart valve replaced.
In people who have had a heart attack, warfarin is used to reduce the risk of death, another heart attack, stroke, or other clotting events. It does not dissolve an existing clot, but it helps prevent the clot from growing and stops new dangerous clots from forming.
