Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Your medicine, Teczem, combines two blood pressure lowering drugs: diltiazem (a calcium channel blocker) and enalapril (an ACE inhibitor). Banaba may gently nudge blood pressure down on its own, so taking it alongside Teczem could add to that effect. This isn't about how the drug is broken down, it's simply two things pushing in the same direction.

If your blood pressure drops too far, you might feel dizzy, lightheaded, or unusually tired, especially when standing up quickly. Banaba can also lower blood sugar, which matters if you take diabetes medicine. The evidence here is fairly limited and the effect is likely modest, so don't panic. Just check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding banaba, and keep an eye on your readings.

“Anyone taking Teczem (diltiazem with enalapril) for blood pressure should know that most of the 271 supplements with an interaction on file hit the same targets as the drug itself. The bulk either add to its blood-pressure-lowering effect or change how the body handles diltiazem, which is processed by an enzyme called CYP3A4.”

About Banaba

What is Banaba?

Banaba
  • Blood sugar support
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Weight management
  • High blood pressure
  • Cholesterol support

Banaba is a leaf extract most often used to help support healthy blood sugar, and small early studies suggest its active compound corosolic acid may modestly lower glucose. The overall evidence is limited and short-term, so it should not replace prescribed diabetes care. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before trying it, especially if you take blood sugar medicine.
