Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Your combination pill pairs hydrochlorothiazide (a water pill) with labetalol (a beta-blocker), and both work to bring your blood pressure down. Banaba is mainly studied for blood sugar, but some human and animal research hints it may also nudge blood pressure a little lower on its own. So the concern here is simple: stacking banaba on top of your medicine could add up and drop your pressure more than intended.

If that happens, you might feel dizzy, lightheaded, tired, or faint, especially when standing up quickly. Keep in mind this evidence is fairly limited and the effect is usually mild. Don't change anything on your own, but it's smart to check with your pharmacist or doctor first and to keep an eye on your readings at home.

About Banaba

What is Banaba?

Banaba
  • Blood sugar support
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Weight management
  • High blood pressure
  • Cholesterol support

Banaba is a leaf extract most often used to help support healthy blood sugar, and small early studies suggest its active compound corosolic acid may modestly lower glucose. The overall evidence is limited and short-term, so it should not replace prescribed diabetes care. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before trying it, especially if you take blood sugar medicine.
