Here's the simple version: propranolol already works to lower blood pressure and slow the heart. In animal studies, basil extract nudged blood pressure down too. So in theory, large supplement-strength doses of basil could add to what propranolol is doing and push things a little too far. In an infant taking the oral solution for a hemangioma, that might look like unusual sleepiness, poor feeding, cool or pale skin, or a slow heartbeat.

I want to be honest about the evidence though. This is based only on lab and animal work, not real-world cases, so it's a theoretical concern. The basil in cooking and food is not a worry. If you're thinking about a concentrated basil supplement or essential oil, check with your pharmacist or the child's doctor first.

What Is Propranolol (Infantile Hemangioma) Used For?

Brand name: Hemangeol

This intravenous (IV) form of propranolol is used in hospital settings to treat serious, life-threatening heart rhythm problems. It works on several types of abnormal rhythms, including those that happen during anesthesia or are caused by drug toxicity.

Specific uses include fast heart rhythms coming from the upper chambers of the heart (supraventricular tachycardia), dangerous rhythms caused by too much digitalis in the body, and certain fast rhythms triggered by excess stress hormones (catecholamines) during surgery.
