Meprobamate is a tranquilizer that calms the brain, and it can already leave you feeling drowsy, foggy, or slow to react. The concern here is that bay leaf, in concentrated amounts, contains a compound (methyl eugenol) that showed sedative effects in animal studies. If those effects carry over to people, pairing it with meprobamate could stack the sleepiness on top of each other, possibly making you more groggy, dizzy, or off balance.

I want to be honest: this is a theoretical concern based on lab and animal data, not strong human proof. The bay leaf used to season soups and stews is very unlikely to cause trouble. Concentrated bay leaf supplements or essential oils are a different story, so check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

What Is Meprobamate Used For?

Meprobamate tablets are used to manage anxiety disorders or to provide short-term relief of anxiety symptoms. It is intended for anxiety that rises to the level of a disorder — everyday stress and tension that most people experience generally do not require this type of medication.

Because its effectiveness beyond four months has not been well studied, meprobamate is typically used for a limited period of time, with a prescriber checking in regularly to decide whether continued use is still appropriate.
