Bay Leaf and Clobazam

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

CNS DEPRESSANTS

Why this applies to Clobazam

Clobazam falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Bay Leaf interacts with.

Theoretically, taking bay leaf in large amounts may enhance the therapeutic and adverse effects of sedatives.
Bay leaf contains methyl eugenol. Animal research shows that methyl eugenol has sedative properties. Avoid concomitant use.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: Clobazam (Onfi, Sympazan) already calms down activity in the brain, which is exactly how it helps with seizures. Bay leaf contains a compound called methyl eugenol that, in animal studies, also seems to have a mild sedating effect. So the worry is that the two could add up and leave you feeling extra drowsy, foggy, or unsteady on your feet.

I want to be honest about the strength of this: it's theoretical, based on lab and animal data, not real cases in people. Bay leaf used in cooking is not a concern at all. The question only comes up with concentrated supplements or essential oils. Don't change your clobazam on your own, but do mention any bay leaf supplement to your pharmacist or doctor first.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Clobazam page

“Clobazam (Onfi, Sympazan, Frisium) is a benzodiazepine for seizures, so extra sedation is a real safety hazard rather than a nuisance, and that is what most of this list adds. The great majority of these supplements and herbs deepen drowsiness, alcohol in any form among the most serious pairings.”
