Here's the gist with Xanax (alprazolam) and bay leaf: this medication already calms brain activity, which is why it eases anxiety and panic but can also leave you drowsy, foggy, or unsteady. Bay leaf contains a compound called methyl eugenol that, in animal studies, showed mild sedative effects. So in theory, layering the two could deepen that sedation, meaning more sleepiness, slower thinking, or poor coordination.

I want to be honest about how soft this evidence is. It's based on lab and animal research, not real people, and the bay leaf you toss in soup is far too little to worry about. The caution only really applies to concentrated supplements or essential oils. Before using those alongside Xanax, run it by your pharmacist or doctor.

What Is Alprazolam Used For?

Brand names: Xanax, Niravam

Alprazolam treats generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and panic disorder, with or without agoraphobia, in adults. These uses are supported across multiple alprazolam products, including tablets, orally disintegrating tablets, oral solution, and extended-release tablets.

Xanax (tablet) is indicated for the acute treatment of GAD and for panic disorder. Xanax XR (extended-release tablet) and alprazolam extended-release tablets are indicated specifically for panic disorder with or without agoraphobia — not for GAD. Alprazolam orally disintegrating tablets and alprazolam oral solution are indicated for both GAD and panic disorder.
