Here's the simple version: Diazepam (Valium) already calms the brain and can make you drowsy. Bay leaf contains a compound called methyl eugenol that, in animal studies, showed its own mild sedating effect. So in theory, piling concentrated bay leaf on top of diazepam could add to that calming, leaving you more sleepy, foggy, unsteady on your feet, or slow to react than you'd expect.

I want to keep this in perspective, though. This concern is theoretical and comes from lab and animal work, not from people. The pinch of bay leaf in your soup or stew is not going to do this. The caution is really about strong supplements or bay leaf essential oil. If you take diazepam, just check with your pharmacist or doctor before using concentrated bay leaf products.

What Is Diazepam Used For?

Brand names: Valium, Valium injection, Diastat AcuDial, Valtoco

  • Diazepam is used to relieve anxiety and to control agitation caused by alcohol withdrawal. It is also used along with other medications to control muscle spasms and spasticity caused by certain neurological disorders such as cerebral palsy (condition that causes difficulty with movement and balance), paraplegia (inability to move parts of the body), athetosis (abnormal muscle contractions), and stiff-man syndrome (a rare disorder with muscle rigidity and stiffness). Diazepam is also used along with other medications to control seizures. Diazepam is in a class of medications called benzodiazepines. It works by calming abnormal overactivity in the brain.
