Barbiturates like butalbital, phenobarbital, and secobarbital are powerful sedatives that slow down your central nervous system. Bay leaf, when used in concentrated supplement amounts, contains a compound called methyl eugenol that animal studies suggest has its own calming, sedative effect. Stacked together, the worry is that bay leaf could add to the drowsy, slowed-down effects of these medicines.

In real life that could mean more sleepiness, dizziness, foggy thinking, or slowed breathing than you would expect from your dose alone. The good news: this is a theoretical concern based mostly on lab and animal work, and the bay leaf you sprinkle into soup or stew is not a problem at all. The caution is really about strong supplements or essential oils. If you take one of these, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding bay leaf capsules.
