Lansoprazole falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Berberine interacts with.

Theoretically, berberine might increase serum levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In vitro research and preliminary clinical research show that berberine moderately inhibits CYP3A4. Theoretically, use of berberine with drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 might increase drug levels and increase the risk of adverse effects.

Here's the situation with these two together. Your body clears lansoprazole partly through a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 (it also uses another enzyme, CYP2C19). Berberine appears to gently block CYP3A4, so in theory it could slow how quickly you clear lansoprazole and let a little more build up in your blood.

If that happens, you might notice slightly more of lansoprazole's usual effects, like headache, diarrhea, stomach pain, or nausea. The good news is this is mostly a theoretical concern based on lab and early human data, and lansoprazole is generally a forgiving, well-tolerated medicine, so a big problem is unlikely. Still, since berberine itself can upset your stomach, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

About Lansoprazole

What Is Lansoprazole Used For?

Brand name: Prevacid

Lansoprazole is prescribed for a range of conditions where excess stomach acid is the problem. It treats active stomach and duodenal ulcers (sores in the stomach or upper small intestine), helps heal ulcers caused by NSAID pain relievers, and can reduce the risk of those ulcers coming back.

It's also used for gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), erosive esophagitis (acid damage to the esophagus), and rare conditions where the stomach makes far too much acid — like Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. When combined with antibiotics, it helps wipe out H. pylori bacteria that cause recurring ulcers.
