Here's the gist with Diflunisal and bergamot: this isn't about how your body breaks down the medicine. Diflunisal itself can make your skin a little more sensitive to sunlight, and bergamot (specifically a compound called bergapten in its essential oil) does the same thing. Put the two together and you may sunburn more easily or get a stronger skin reaction in the sun than you'd expect.

The key detail is that this concern is mainly about topical bergamot essential oil applied to the skin, not the cholesterol-type bergamot extract taken by mouth. The evidence here is theoretical, based on how these substances behave, so don't be alarmed. Just use good sun protection, and check with your pharmacist if you plan to use bergamot oil on your skin.
