Here's the thing to know about pairing bergamot with nortriptyline: this isn't about your liver breaking down the medicine or changing how well it treats your depression. The concern is your skin. Nortriptyline can already make some people more sensitive to sunlight, and bergamot essential oil contains a compound called bergapten that does the same thing. Put them together and you could sunburn more easily or get a rash with less sun than usual.

I want to be honest that this is a theoretical concern based on how these things work, not something proven in studies. It mostly applies to the essential oil used on your skin, not the oral cholesterol-type bergamot supplements. Either way, use good sun protection, and check with your pharmacist or doctor if you have questions.

Nortriptyline is approved to relieve symptoms of depression. This applies to nortriptyline hydrochloride capsules, nortriptyline hydrochloride oral solution, and Pamelor capsules — all used for the same core indication.

The label notes that depression arising from within the body (endogenous depression) may respond better than other types of depression, though all of these products are indicated for the broader relief of depressive symptoms.
