Here's the simple version. Hydrochlorothiazide can already make your skin more sensitive to sunlight, so you may sunburn faster than you'd expect. Bergamot essential oil contains a compound called bergapten, which does the same thing. Put the two together and that sun-sensitivity could stack, meaning a quicker, worse burn or rash on exposed skin.

Keep in mind this is a theoretical concern based on how these things work, not a long list of real-world cases, and it mainly applies to bergamot oil on the skin, not small culinary amounts. If you use bergamot, be smart in the sun: sunscreen, a hat, and shade go a long way. Have a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor if you're unsure.

Bergamot is a Mediterranean citrus fruit, and its standardized extract is most often used to support cholesterol and heart health, with some early but promising research. The essential oil is widely used for fragrance and aromatherapy but should not be taken by mouth, and it can make skin more sensitive to sunlight. About Hydrochlorothiazide

What Is Hydrochlorothiazide Used For?

Brand names: Esidrix, Hydro, Microzide, HydroDiuril, Hydro-D, Oretic, Aquazide H, Aquazide, HCTZ

Hydrochlorothiazide treats high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and children, either alone or combined with other blood pressure medicines. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of strokes and heart attacks.

It also treats edema (fluid buildup) linked to congestive heart failure, hepatic cirrhosis (liver scarring), and kidney conditions including nephrotic syndrome. Hydrochlorothiazide tablets are additionally indicated for edema caused by corticosteroid or estrogen therapy, and edema from acute glomerulonephritis or chronic renal failure. Inzirqo (the oral suspension) is specifically approved for both hypertension and edema in adult and pediatric patients.
