Here's what's going on with bergamot and your Interferon Beta-1b (Betaseron, Betaferon, Extavia). This isn't about how your body breaks the medicine down. Instead, it's about your skin. Interferon beta-1b can already make some people more sensitive to sunlight, and bergamot essential oil contains a compound called bergapten that does the same thing. Put together, they could make a sunburn-type reaction more likely, especially at your injection sites.

To be clear, this is a theoretical concern based on how these things behave, not something proven in studies, and it mainly involves the essential oil applied to skin rather than the cholesterol-type capsules taken by mouth. Still, it's worth mentioning to your pharmacist or doctor, and using sunscreen is a smart, simple step.

What Is Interferon Beta-1b Injection Used For?

Brand names: Betaseron, Betaferon, Extavia

  • Interferon beta-1b injection is used to reduce episodes of symptoms in patients with relapsing-remitting (course of disease where symptoms flare up from time to time) of multiple sclerosis (MS, a disease in which the nerves do not function properly and patients may experience weakness, numbness, loss of muscle coordination and problems with vision, speech, and bladder control). Interferon beta-1b is in a class of medications called immunomodulators. It is not known exactly how interferon beta-1b works to treat MS.
