Here's the thing to know about this pairing: it's really about your skin and sunlight, not about how nifedipine works inside your body. Bergamot essential oil contains a compound called bergapten, which can make skin more sensitive to the sun. Nifedipine itself can occasionally do the same. So when both are in the picture, you might sunburn more easily or get a rash on sun-exposed skin.

A couple of reassuring points. This is a theoretical concern based on how these things behave, not strong proof. It mainly applies to bergamot oil put on the skin, not the cholesterol-type capsules you swallow. Bergamot does not change nifedipine's blood pressure or chest-pain effects here. Still, use sunscreen, and check with your pharmacist before using bergamot oil on your skin.

Bergamot is a Mediterranean citrus fruit, and its standardized extract is most often used to support cholesterol and heart health, with some early but promising research. The essential oil is widely used for fragrance and aromatherapy but should not be taken by mouth, and it can make skin more sensitive to sunlight. About Nifedipine

What Is Nifedipine Used For?

Brand names: Procardia XL, Adalat PA, Adalat, Nifedin, Nifed PA, Nifed, Procardia, Adalat XL, Adalat CC, Adalat LA, Adalat Retard, Adipine MR, Adipine XL, Cardilate MR, Coracten SR, Coracten XL, Fortipine LA 40, Hypolar Retard 20, Nifedipress MR, Nifopress Retard, Tensipine MR

Nifedipine treats high blood pressure (hypertension), chronic stable angina (chest pain brought on by physical effort), and vasospastic angina (chest pain caused by spasm of the coronary arteries, sometimes called Prinzmetal's angina). Lowering blood pressure with nifedipine helps reduce the risk of strokes and heart attacks.

The capsule form is approved for vasospastic angina and chronic stable angina only — it is not approved for high blood pressure. The extended-release tablet (including Procardia) covers all three uses: vasospastic angina, chronic stable angina, and high blood pressure.
