Here's the simple version: this isn't about how your body processes fluoxetine (Prozac), and it won't make the medicine stronger or weaker. Both bergamot and fluoxetine can, on their own, make your skin more sensitive to sunlight. Put them together and you could theoretically sunburn a little easier or break out in a rash after time outdoors.

A couple of things to keep in mind. This concern is mostly about bergamot essential oil applied to the skin, which contains a compound called bergapten. It's a theoretical worry based on chemistry, not strong real-world proof. Eating bergamot or taking the standardized cholesterol extract is far less likely to matter. Just use sunscreen and check with your pharmacist if you're unsure.

Bergamot is a Mediterranean citrus fruit, and its standardized extract is most often used to support cholesterol and heart health, with some early but promising research. Fluoxetine is approved to treat four conditions: major depressive disorder (MDD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), bulimia nervosa (a binge-eating and purging disorder), and panic disorder — with or without agoraphobia (fear of situations that feel hard to escape).

It works for adults across all four conditions, and for children and teens with depression (ages 8–18) and OCD (ages 7–17).
