Here's the thing to understand about this pairing: it's not about how your body processes Divalproex Sodium (Depakote). The concern is purely about your skin and sunlight. Bergamot, especially the essential oil applied to the skin, contains a compound called bergapten that can make your skin more reactive to the sun. Some medicines, including divalproex, are listed as drugs that may also raise sun sensitivity, so layering the two could mean a faster or worse sunburn.

Honestly, this is a theoretical caution based on chemistry, not strong real-world reports, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. The smart move is simple sun protection: sunscreen, a hat, and shade. Specifically, they are approved for complex partial seizures (either alone or with other seizure types) as monotherapy or add-on therapy, and for simple and complex absence seizures as sole therapy or add-on therapy.
