Here's the thing about Porfimer (Photofrin): it's a photosensitizing medicine on purpose. It's used in light-based cancer treatment, and it makes your skin and eyes very sensitive to bright light and sunlight for weeks after a dose. Sunburn-like reactions, redness, and swelling are already a known concern during that time.

Now layer on bergamot. Its essential oil contains bergapten, a compound that also makes skin react more strongly to light. So, in theory, putting bergamot oil on your skin while you're sensitive from Porfimer could stack the effect and worsen that sunburn-type reaction. This is a theoretical caution based on how both work, not proven cases. Still, while you're being treated, it's smart to skip bergamot oil and check with your care team first.

Bergamot is a Mediterranean citrus fruit, and its standardized extract is most often used to support cholesterol and heart health, with some early but promising research. The essential oil is widely used for fragrance and aromatherapy but should not be taken by mouth, and it can make skin more sensitive to sunlight. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using bergamot supplements, especially if you take medicine for cholesterol or blood sugar.
