Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thinking behind this pairing. Some yeast and mushroom types of beta-glucans may nudge the immune system to be more active. Gamifant (emapalumab-lzsg) is doing the opposite job, it's an antibody that calms an overactive immune system in HLH by blocking an inflammatory protein. So in theory, an immune-revving supplement could work against what your treatment is trying to accomplish.

I want to be honest about how soft this concern is. It rests on lab and animal data, not on real patients taking these two together, so it's theoretical. Still, with a condition as serious as HLH, I wouldn't add any beta-glucan supplement on your own. The oat and barley fiber in normal foods isn't the worry here. Please run any supplement past your specialist or pharmacist first.

About Beta-glucans

What is Beta-glucans?

  • High cholesterol
  • Heart health
  • Immune support
  • Blood sugar control
  • Wound care (topical)

Beta-glucans are natural fibers found in oats, barley, mushrooms, and yeast. The strongest evidence supports the oat and barley types for modestly lowering cholesterol and blood sugar, while immune-related claims from yeast and mushroom sources are far less proven. They are generally well tolerated, but check with your pharmacist before starting any supplement.
