Beta-glucans + Metoprolol
Metoprolol brand names: Lopressor, Toprol XL.
Beta-glucans has a moderate interaction with Metoprolol. Theoretically, taking beta-glucans with antihypertensive drugs might increase the risk of hypotension.

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS
Why this applies to Metoprolol
Metoprolol falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Beta-glucans interacts with.
Clinical research shows that taking beta-glucans may reduce systolic and diastolic blood pressure in some hypertensive individuals.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist: metoprolol already works to bring your blood pressure down by slowing your heart rate and easing your blood vessels. Oat and barley beta-glucans can nudge blood pressure a little lower on their own. So when you take them together, those small effects may stack, and in theory your numbers could dip more than expected.
If that happens, you might feel lightheaded, dizzy, tired, or shaky standing up too fast. To be honest, this is a theoretical, low-evidence concern, and the food amounts in oatmeal are unlikely to cause trouble. It's mainly worth a thought with concentrated supplement doses. Please don't change anything on your own. Just give your pharmacist or doctor a heads-up, and check your blood pressure now and then so you both can keep an eye on it.

Questions About Beta-glucans or Metoprolol
These are real questions from readers, answered by the pharmacists at HelloPharmacist — written by a person, not generated from a database. From our pharmacist’s overview on the Metoprolol page
“With metoprolol (Lopressor, Toprol XL), a beta-blocker for high blood pressure and heart problems, these interactions deserve genuine care, starting with the five rated major. Most entries pull blood pressure one way or the other: many supplements add to metoprolol's lowering effect and can drop pressure too far, while a few, tyramine…”

About Beta-glucans
What is Beta-glucans?
- High cholesterol
- Heart health
- Immune support
- Blood sugar control
- Wound care (topical)
Beta-glucans are natural fibers found in oats, barley, mushrooms, and yeast. The strongest evidence supports the oat and barley types for modestly lowering cholesterol and blood sugar, while immune-related claims from yeast and mushroom sources are far less proven. They are generally well tolerated, but check with your pharmacist before starting any supplement.
About Metoprolol
What Is Metoprolol Used For?
Brand names: Lopressor, Toprol XL
Metoprolol is used for several heart and blood pressure conditions. Which ones depend on the product you take.
- High blood pressure (hypertension): metoprolol tartrate tablets, metoprolol succinate extended-release tablets (including Toprol-XL), and Lopressor tablets lower blood pressure. This lowers the risk of strokes and heart attacks.
- Angina pectoris: these same tablet products are also used for angina.
- Heart failure: metoprolol succinate extended-release tablets (including Toprol-XL) are used in heart failure. They reduce the risk of cardiovascular death and heart failure hospitalizations.
- Heart attack: metoprolol tartrate tablets and Lopressor tablets reduce the risk of cardiovascular death after a definite or suspected acute heart attack, in stable patients, when used with intravenous metoprolol. Metoprolol tartrate injection is used in the hospital for the same purpose, followed by oral metoprolol.

Metoprolol Is Linked to Lower Levels of One Nutrient
Natural Medicines records Metoprolol as a medicine that can lower these. This is not an interaction with Beta-glucans — it is a separate effect of the medicine, and it is a reason some people are advised to supplement rather than to avoid one:
