Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist: oat and barley beta-glucans can nudge your blood pressure down a little on their own, mostly thanks to their cholesterol-lowering, heart-friendly effects. Since olmesartan (Benicar) is already lowering your pressure by relaxing your blood vessels, stacking the two could add up and push your numbers a touch lower than expected.

To be fair, this is a theoretical, anecdotal concern, not a strong or dangerous one. Food amounts of oats or barley are very unlikely to cause trouble. If you take concentrated beta-glucan supplements, just watch for signs your pressure dipped too low, like dizziness, lightheadedness when standing, or feeling unusually tired. Nothing to panic about, but check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding the supplement.

  • High cholesterol
  • Heart health
  • Immune support
  • Blood sugar control
  • Wound care (topical)

Beta-glucans are natural fibers found in oats, barley, mushrooms, and yeast. The strongest evidence supports the oat and barley types for modestly lowering cholesterol and blood sugar, while immune-related claims from yeast and mushroom sources are far less proven. They are generally well tolerated, but check with your pharmacist before starting any supplement.
