Deutetrabenazine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES — the group Beta-methylphenethylamine (bmpea) interacts with.

Theoretically, BMPEA might increase the levels and clinical effects of CYP2D6 substrates.
In vitro research shows that BMPEA strongly inhibits CYP2D6.

Here's the gist for Austedo (deutetrabenazine). Your body relies on an enzyme called CYP2D6 to clear this drug. In lab studies, the stimulant BMPEA appears to block that enzyme. If it slows down that breakdown, deutetrabenazine could build up in your system, which may mean stronger effects and more side effects than expected, such as drowsiness, dizziness, restlessness, depression, or low blood pressure. On top of that, BMPEA is an amphetamine-like stimulant that can push your heart rate and blood pressure up, which doesn't pair well with this medication.

I'll be honest, this concern is theoretical and comes from lab data, not real-world studies in people. Still, given how this drug is dosed carefully, I'd avoid BMPEA and check in with your doctor or pharmacist before mixing the two.

Deutetrabenazine (brand names Austedo XR and Austedo) is approved for adults to treat two conditions: chorea associated with Huntington's disease (the involuntary, jerky movements caused by Huntington's) and tardive dyskinesia (uncontrolled, repetitive movements that often develop after long-term use of certain psychiatric medications).

Both Austedo XR (extended-release tablet) and Austedo (tablet) are approved for these same uses in adults. The two products differ in their dosing schedule and how they are taken, but both target the same conditions.
