Beta-methylphenethylamine (bmpea) + Dextromethorphan
Dextromethorphan brand names: Hold, Benylin Adult, Benylin Pediatric, Theraflu Thin Strips Long Acting Cough, Neo Citran Thin Strips Cough.
Dextromethorphan falls into 2 drug categories that Beta-methylphenethylamine (bmpea) can interact with; the most serious is rated moderate. Theoretically, BMPEA might increase the levels and clinical effects of CYP2D6 substrates.

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 2 Interactions?
Beta-methylphenethylamine (bmpea) interacts with whole categories of medication. Dextromethorphan falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Beta-methylphenethylamine (bmpea) in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES
1 of 2Why this applies to Dextromethorphan
Dextromethorphan falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES — the group Beta-methylphenethylamine (bmpea) interacts with.
In vitro research shows that BMPEA strongly inhibits CYP2D6.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the basic idea: your body relies on an enzyme called CYP2D6 to clear dextromethorphan out of your system. Lab studies suggest BMPEA can block that enzyme. If it does, the cough medicine could hang around longer and build up to higher levels than usual, which may amp up its typical effects, things like drowsiness, dizziness, confusion, or even feeling restless and jittery.
I want to be honest with you though, this is a theoretical concern based on test-tube research, not real-world cases. There's also a separate worry: both BMPEA and high-dose dextromethorphan can nudge serotonin and stimulate the body, so combining them isn't ideal. Since BMPEA shows up unlisted in some supplements, I'd run this by your pharmacist before mixing the two.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
2 of 2Dextromethorphan also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.
In vitro research shows that BMPEA inhibits CYP3A4 by up to 37%.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist for cough syrup and BMPEA. Your body uses a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to help clear dextromethorphan. In lab dish testing, BMPEA slowed that enzyme by about a third. If that happens in a person, dextromethorphan could hang around longer and build up, which might mean more dizziness, drowsiness, or confusion than usual.
I'll be honest though: this is a theoretical concern based only on test-tube data, not real patient cases, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. The bigger issue is BMPEA itself, since it's an unapproved amphetamine-like stimulant that can raise your heart rate and blood pressure. I'd steer clear of it and check with your pharmacist before combining the two.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Dextromethorphan page
“A glass of grapefruit juice can push dextromethorphan (Benylin, Hold, and other cough medicines) to higher levels than intended, one of four major-rated entries among the 171 supplements and herbs on file, and the list as a whole warrants real care. Most interactions trace back to the liver enzymes (CYP3A4 and CYP2D6) that clear dextro…”

About Beta-methylphenethylamine (bmpea)
What is Beta-methylphenethylamine (bmpea)?
- Weight loss
- Pre-workout energy
- Athletic performance
- Appetite suppression
- Mental focus
Beta-methylphenethylamine (BMPEA) is a synthetic stimulant chemically similar to amphetamine that has been found in some weight-loss and sports supplements, often without being clearly listed on the label. It is not an approved or well-studied dietary ingredient, and regulators have warned that it may carry real cardiovascular risks. Because of safety concerns and the lack of human research, it is best avoided.
About Dextromethorphan
What Is Dextromethorphan Used For?
Brand names: Hold, Benylin Adult, Benylin Pediatric, Theraflu Thin Strips Long Acting Cough, Neo Citran Thin Strips Cough
Dextromethorphan temporarily relieves cough due to minor throat and bronchial irritation, such as the kind that comes with the common cold or breathing in irritants. It also helps reduce the urge to cough so you — or your child — can get to sleep.
Some products, including CVS Long Acting Cough and Premier Value Tussin Cough oral liquids, are also indicated to help loosen phlegm (mucus) and thin bronchial secretions to help drain the airways.
