Albuterol falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Blond Psyllium interacts with.

Theoretically, psyllium might increase, decrease, or have no effect on the absorption of oral drugs.
Psyllium seems to have variable effects on drug absorption. To avoid changes in absorption, take psyllium 30-60 minutes after oral medications. Animal research shows that blond psyllium delays and increases the absorption of metformin and ethinyl estradiol. Conversely, case reports and animal research suggest that blond psyllium might reduce absorption of lithium, digoxin, olanzapine, and carbamazepine. Finally, some pharmacokinetic studies show that psyllium does not affect the absorption of levothyroxine or warfarin.

Here's the good news first: most people use albuterol as an inhaler (Ventolin, ProAir, Proventil HFA), and psyllium only acts on things you swallow. Since inhaled albuterol goes straight to your lungs and never passes through your gut, blond psyllium won't touch it at all.

If you happen to take albuterol as a tablet or syrup, then the picture changes slightly. Psyllium's thick fiber gel can loosely grab onto oral medicines and shift how much your body absorbs, in either direction. This is mostly theoretical and rated minor, so it's not something to lose sleep over. A simple fix is timing: take your oral albuterol first, then wait 30 to 60 minutes before your psyllium. If you ever notice your breathing relief feels weaker, check in with your pharmacist or doctor.

Blond psyllium is a soluble fiber from the seed husks of Plantago ovata, and it is one of the better-studied fiber supplements. It can help with both constipation and diarrhea and may modestly lower cholesterol and blood sugar. It is generally well tolerated when taken with plenty of water, but always start low and check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

What Is Albuterol Used For?

Brand names: Proventil, Volmax, Ventolin (U.S.), ProAir HFA

Albuterol is used to treat or prevent bronchospasm — sudden tightening of the airways — in adults and children with reversible obstructive airway disease, such as asthma. Most inhaled formulations (HFA inhalers, dry-powder inhalers, and nebulizer solutions) are approved for patients 4 years and older, though some nebulizer solutions are approved for children as young as 2, and the oral syrup covers adults and children 2 and older. Albuterol tablets are approved for adults and children 6 and older.

Albuterol inhaled products are also used to prevent exercise-induced bronchospasm in patients 4 years and older. The inhaled aerosol solution (0.5%) is approved specifically for relief of bronchospasm and acute attacks in patients 12 and older. Not every formulation covers every use — follow the instructions for the specific product you have been prescribed.
