Alectinib Hydrochloride falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Blond Psyllium interacts with.

Theoretically, psyllium might increase, decrease, or have no effect on the absorption of oral drugs.
Psyllium seems to have variable effects on drug absorption. To avoid changes in absorption, take psyllium 30-60 minutes after oral medications. Animal research shows that blond psyllium delays and increases the absorption of metformin and ethinyl estradiol. Conversely, case reports and animal research suggest that blond psyllium might reduce absorption of lithium, digoxin, olanzapine, and carbamazepine. Finally, some pharmacokinetic studies show that psyllium does not affect the absorption of levothyroxine or warfarin.

Here's the simple version. Psyllium forms a thick gel in your stomach and intestines, and that gel can sometimes grab onto whatever else is in there. With a pill like alectinib (Alecensa), that means the fiber could, in theory, slow down or change how much of your dose gets absorbed. The concern here is that you'd absorb a little less of your cancer medicine, which we never want with something this important.

Honestly, this is mostly a theoretical worry. Alectinib hasn't been specifically studied with psyllium, and the evidence overall is weak. The easy fix is timing: take your alectinib first (with food, as directed), then wait about 30 to 60 minutes before your psyllium. Always run this by your oncology team or pharmacist before changing anything.

Blond psyllium is a soluble fiber from the seed husks of Plantago ovata, and it is one of the better-studied fiber supplements. It can help with both constipation and diarrhea and may modestly lower cholesterol and blood sugar. It is generally well tolerated when taken with plenty of water, but always start low and check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

What Is Alectinib Used For?

Brand name: Alecensa

Alecensa (alectinib) is used in adults with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) whose tumors test positive for a gene change called ALK (anaplastic lymphoma kinase). Your tumor must be confirmed ALK-positive by an FDA-approved test before starting treatment.

Alecensa is approved for two situations: as adjuvant treatment (after surgery to remove the tumor, for tumors that are large enough or have spread to nearby lymph nodes) to help prevent the cancer from coming back, and for metastatic NSCLC (cancer that has already spread to other areas of the body).
