Deferasirox falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Blond Psyllium interacts with.

Theoretically, psyllium might increase, decrease, or have no effect on the absorption of oral drugs.
Psyllium seems to have variable effects on drug absorption. To avoid changes in absorption, take psyllium 30-60 minutes after oral medications. Animal research shows that blond psyllium delays and increases the absorption of metformin and ethinyl estradiol. Conversely, case reports and animal research suggest that blond psyllium might reduce absorption of lithium, digoxin, olanzapine, and carbamazepine. Finally, some pharmacokinetic studies show that psyllium does not affect the absorption of levothyroxine or warfarin.

Here's the practical concern with mixing blond psyllium and deferasirox. Psyllium is a thick, gel-forming fiber, and that gel can grab onto a pill in your gut and slow or reduce how much of it gets absorbed. Deferasirox isn't a prodrug, so it doesn't need to be activated. It simply needs to be absorbed well to do its job of pulling excess iron out of your body.

The honest answer is that this is theoretical for deferasirox specifically. We have no solid studies showing a real problem, just the general idea that fiber can shift drug absorption either way. To stay safe, a simple spacing trick helps: take your deferasirox first, then wait 30 to 60 minutes before your psyllium. If you're worried about your iron control, check in with your pharmacist or doctor.

Blond psyllium is a soluble fiber from the seed husks of Plantago ovata, and it is one of the better-studied fiber supplements. It can help with both constipation and diarrhea and may modestly lower cholesterol and blood sugar. It is generally well tolerated when taken with plenty of water, but always start low and check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

What Is Deferasirox Used For?

Brand names: Exjade, Jadenu

Deferasirox — available as tablets (including Exjade and Jadenu) and oral powder granules (including Jadenu) — is used to treat chronic iron overload in patients 2 years and older whose bodies have accumulated too much iron from repeated blood transfusions.

It is also used to treat chronic iron overload in patients 10 years and older who have non-transfusion-dependent thalassemia (NTDT) syndromes — a group of inherited blood disorders — when liver iron levels and blood ferritin levels meet specific thresholds. The safety and effectiveness of deferasirox when combined with other iron-chelation therapies have not been established.
