Blond Psyllium and Estradiol, Medroxyprogesterone

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Blond Psyllium interacts with whole categories of medication. Estradiol, Medroxyprogesterone falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Blond Psyllium in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Minor).

Minor

ORAL DRUGS

1 of 2

Why this applies to Estradiol, Medroxyprogesterone

Estradiol, Medroxyprogesterone falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Blond Psyllium interacts with.

Theoretically, psyllium might increase, decrease, or have no effect on the absorption of oral drugs.
Psyllium seems to have variable effects on drug absorption. To avoid changes in absorption, take psyllium 30-60 minutes after oral medications. Animal research shows that blond psyllium delays and increases the absorption of metformin and ethinyl estradiol. Conversely, case reports and animal research suggest that blond psyllium might reduce absorption of lithium, digoxin, olanzapine, and carbamazepine. Finally, some pharmacokinetic studies show that psyllium does not affect the absorption of levothyroxine or warfarin.
Severity Minor Likelihood Possible Evidence B

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: psyllium is a thick, gel-forming fiber, and when you swallow it around the same time as a pill, that gel can grab onto the medicine in your gut and change how much gets absorbed. With your estradiol/medroxyprogesterone hormone therapy, the timing is what matters most. This isn't a dangerous interaction, just a minor one, and the evidence is fairly limited (some of it comes from animal studies looking at estrogen absorption).

To keep things steady, a good habit is to take your hormone tablet first, then wait about 30 to 60 minutes before your psyllium. That way your body absorbs a consistent amount each day, so your symptom control stays reliable. If you ever notice changes, like the return of hot flashes or unexpected spotting, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor before adjusting anything.

ETHINYL ESTRADIOL

2 of 2

Estradiol, Medroxyprogesterone also falls under ETHINYL ESTRADIOL.

Theoretically, taking blond psyllium at the same time as ethinyl estradiol might alter levels of estradiol.
Concurrent use of blond psyllium with ethinyl estradiol results in a slight increase in the extent of ethinyl estradiol absorption and a slower rate of absorption. However, this is unlikely to be clinically significant.
Severity Minor Likelihood Unlikely Evidence D

Interaction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans..

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist for your estradiol/medroxyprogesterone combo: because blond psyllium turns into a thick gel in your gut, there's a thought that it could grab onto your hormone pills and change how they're absorbed. The lab data actually suggests a slight increase in how much estrogen gets absorbed, just at a slower pace. In plain terms, this is a very minor, mostly theoretical concern.

Honestly, I wouldn't lose sleep over it. To play it safe, simply space them out, take your hormone tablet a couple of hours apart from the psyllium. If you ever notice things like breast tenderness, nausea, or breakthrough spotting, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor.
