Blond Psyllium and Insulin (Human)

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Minor

ORAL DRUGS

Why this applies to Insulin (Human)

Insulin (Human) falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Blond Psyllium interacts with.

Theoretically, psyllium might increase, decrease, or have no effect on the absorption of oral drugs.
Psyllium seems to have variable effects on drug absorption. To avoid changes in absorption, take psyllium 30-60 minutes after oral medications. Animal research shows that blond psyllium delays and increases the absorption of metformin and ethinyl estradiol. Conversely, case reports and animal research suggest that blond psyllium might reduce absorption of lithium, digoxin, olanzapine, and carbamazepine. Finally, some pharmacokinetic studies show that psyllium does not affect the absorption of levothyroxine or warfarin.
Severity Minor Likelihood Possible Evidence B

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's some good news if you use insulin: this particular interaction is really about oral medications that psyllium fiber can grab onto in your gut. Insulin, whether it's Novolin or the inhaled Afrezza, isn't swallowed as a pill, so psyllium doesn't block its absorption the way it might with something taken by mouth.

The thing to keep in mind is more of a teamwork effect. Blond psyllium can gently lower blood sugar on its own, and insulin already does that job. Together they could nudge your sugar a little lower than expected, which might mean shakiness, sweating, or feeling lightheaded. It's usually mild, but if you're adding a fiber supplement, give your pharmacist or doctor a heads-up so they can watch your numbers.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Insulin (Human) page

“With human insulin (Novolin, Afrezza), extra glucose lowering is not a nuisance, it is the hazard itself, and this is one of the lists I treat as genuinely serious. Nearly every ingredient here either drops blood sugar on its own or adds to insulin's effect, and the combination can push a normal dose into hypoglycemia, a dangerous low.”
