These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 2 Interactions?
Boswellia Serrata interacts with whole categories of medication. Ethiny Estradiol, Levonorgestrel falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Boswellia Serrata in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES
1 of 2Why this applies to Ethiny Estradiol, Levonorgestrel
Ethiny Estradiol, Levonorgestrel falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Boswellia Serrata interacts with.
In vitro research shows that Boswellia serrata gum resin inhibits CYP1A2 enzymes.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist for your birth control pill (the ethinyl estradiol and levonorgestrel combo found in brands like Microgynon and Logynon). In a lab dish, boswellic acids appear to slow down an enzyme called CYP1A2, which is one of the pathways your body uses to clear the estrogen part of your pill. If that pathway slows down, estrogen levels could theoretically run a little higher, which might mean more of the usual estrogen-related complaints like nausea, breast tenderness, bloating, or headaches.
I want to be honest though: this is only a theoretical concern based on test-tube data, not real people, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Your pill stays just as effective. If you plan to take Boswellia regularly for joint pain, give your pharmacist or doctor a quick heads-up so they can keep an eye on things.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
2 of 2Ethiny Estradiol, Levonorgestrel also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.
In vitro research shows that Boswellia serrata gum resin inhibits CYP3A4 enzymes. Other in vitro research shows that Boswellia serrata extract inhibits CYP3A4 enzymes at most concentrations, although it may modestly induce enzyme activity at low concentrations.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Your birth control pill (Microgynon, Logynon) contains ethinyl estradiol and levonorgestrel, and your liver clears both hormones partly through an enzyme called CYP3A4. In test-tube studies, boswellic acids from boswellia seem to mostly slow this enzyme down, though at low amounts they might speed it up a little. So the picture isn't fully settled.
Here's the honest part: this is purely theoretical, based on lab work, not real people. If boswellia slowed your hormone breakdown, levels could nudge up, which can mean more nausea, breast tenderness, or spotting. There's no good evidence this weakens your pill's protection. I wouldn't lose sleep over it, but do mention boswellia to your pharmacist so they can keep an eye on things.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Ethiny Estradiol, Levonorgestrel page
“A supplement that lowers hormone levels in a birth control pill can mean an unplanned pregnancy, and St. John's wort can do exactly that to ethinyl estradiol and levonorgestrel (Logynon, Microgynon 30 ED) by speeding up how your liver clears the hormones.”
