Boswellia Serrata and Ethinyl Estradiol, Norethindrone

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Boswellia Serrata interacts with whole categories of medication. Ethinyl Estradiol, Norethindrone falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Boswellia Serrata in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

Moderate

CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES

1 of 2

Why this applies to Ethinyl Estradiol, Norethindrone

Ethinyl Estradiol, Norethindrone falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Boswellia Serrata interacts with.

Theoretically, Boswellia serrata might increase the levels of CYP1A2 substrates.
In vitro research shows that Boswellia serrata gum resin inhibits CYP1A2 enzymes.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Here's the gist for your birth control pills (the combo of ethinyl estradiol and norethindrone). Lab studies suggest boswellia may slow down an enzyme called CYP1A2, which is one of the pathways your body uses to clear the estrogen portion of these pills. If that pathway is blocked, estrogen levels could theoretically creep up a bit. In real life that might show up as nausea, breast tenderness, bloating, headaches, or breakthrough spotting.

That said, this is purely a theoretical concern based on test-tube work, not on people actually taking both together, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Still, it's worth a quick mention to your pharmacist or doctor before you start boswellia, especially if you notice any new symptoms.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES

2 of 2

Ethinyl Estradiol, Norethindrone also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.

Theoretically, Boswellia serrata might increase or decrease the levels and clinical effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that Boswellia serrata gum resin inhibits CYP3A4 enzymes. Other in vitro research shows that Boswellia serrata extract inhibits CYP3A4 enzymes at most concentrations, although it may modestly induce enzyme activity at low concentrations.

Your birth control pill combines ethinyl estradiol and norethindrone, and both of these hormones are processed by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. Boswellia serrata might nudge that enzyme in either direction, so in theory it could either slow down or speed up how fast your body clears these hormones. I want to be honest with you though: this concern comes only from lab dish studies, not from real people, so it's a theoretical worry rather than something we've actually seen happen.

If hormone levels crept up, you might notice more nausea, breast tenderness, or breakthrough bleeding. If they dropped, the bigger concern would be reduced pregnancy protection. Because the direction isn't clear, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before adding Boswellia.
